The Great R'n'R Swindle CD

Written: Jul 11 '00
Pros:Some good Covers, Orchestra songs good for the ladies :), Fun
Cons:Some songs annoying (especially disco and translated versions), Ronnie Biggs voice is annoying

There should be a separate category for the CD and the movie, but as it is, there isn't. So I decided to put my review for the soundtrack under the video. The CD has some of the best covers ever. My Way is a lovely rendition of the late Frank Sinatra's song done by Sid Vicious. The first minute or so is a mockery of Frank, though, and is quite annoying. Actually most of these songs are pretty annoying. L'Anarchie Pou Le UK is a pretty stupid Anarchy In The UK featuring a translated vocal part and what appears to be an accordion. I'm Not Your Stepping Stone is a pretty nice Monkees cover though. They didn't seem to mutilate that to pieces, yet gave it a Sex Pistols touch. Two orchestrated versions of Sex Pistols songs are also on this CD. There are probably two songs which give its Parental Warning sticker. That is Belsen Was A Gas (and Einmal Belsen War Wirflich Bortefflich if you speak German) & Friggin' In The Riggin'. We'll first discuss Friggin' In The Riggin', just because its the easiest to explain, and get out of the way. Its a classic drinking song about a bunch of sailors and a ship. Pretty simple, eh? The Sex Pistols kept it pretty true to the original song. Belsen Was A Gas is a mockery of World War Two which makes many people offended. It talks about the Jews being killed, and all that bad stuff. It was meant to be as offensive as possible. There are a few more covers and a disco dance song, which make up pretty much the rest of the album. Most of the songs are pretty addictive, and are kind of fun to listen to, but if you are looking for the whole Nevermind The Bollocks sound, go away. There is a guest vocal part by Ronnie Biggs (The Great Train Robber I believe). Overall a good CD if you are looking for a bunch of odd cover songs, and just want something different.
