Pros:A smoldering, tropical, latin, sweaty & percussive experience.
Cons:Simon did not get his due on this album.
Rhymin' Simon again proves that better is not settled when it comes to his musical boundaries. His 1990 album "Rhythm Of The Saints", I feel, is one of his best albums - even better than the 1986 "Graceland".
Simon did not receive the acclaim he should have for this album, which is as definitive as was "Graceland". The "Saints" album has a much earthier, soulful and bluesy feel to it throughout and the musical atmosphere is awesome. It is not as commercial in the vein "Graceland" was, but it grabs your rum boogies and holds you through the album. Listen to the percussion and drive that runs through the entire album!
Songs like "Proof", "Can't Run But", "Further to Fly" and "Spirit Voices" are as ethereal, voodoo and aztec as are the South African jolts on "Graceland".
This is Simon's triumph of the 80's/90's world music theme, but I feel gave artists like Sting, and others to mine the same vein. Rhymin' Simon set the pace, again. Buy it.
