Phibes69's Full Review: Funhouse [Limited] by The Stooges
Before punk was a concept, "The Stooges", along with the "New York Dolls" and revolutionary rockers, "The MC5" forged the beginnings of a new sound and approach to music. Loud, brash, uninhibited and full of chaotic energy. Hailing from the Detroit area, "The Stooges were: Iggy Pop-vocals;
Dave Alexander-bass; Ron Asheton-guitars; Scott Asheton-drums and guest saxophonist, Steven Mackay". Innovative in sound and performances...Iggy's
stage antics, are legendary...jumping through beer bottles, cutting up his body and flailing around like a marionette on speed. Being the precursors of the punk and metal scenes, "The Stooges" have contributed a wild expressive, no rules attitude to music, making it less formulated and more creative.
"Funhouse" is a prime example of their original contributions, to a then dying musical form. Hard driving and heavily grooved, the songs contained on "Funhouse" are filled with loud distorted guitars, tight pounding rhythms and the howling, aggressive vocals, of one of the most electrifying performers ever. Angry and uninhibited performances of now classic tunes, like "Loose", "T.V. Eye", the self hating..."Dirt", "1970", the jam, sax infused "Funhouse" and the wildly distorted, blast of pure chaotic noise "L.A. Blues".
True innovators, that played and performed the way they wanted to do...creating one of the most interesting releases, to date. I highly recommend "Funhouse" to the inquisitive, or to the more adventurous music listener.
I also recommend "The Stooges", "Raw Power" "Open Up And Bleed" (for the true Stooges collector)
