bienstock's Full Review: Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate
From the moment that I first heard the rich and heartfelt vocals of Jeremy Enigk, I was hooked. Sunny Day Real Estate's music is intense and draws the listener in to partake in the emotional rollercoaster that Diary represents.
The music is extremely complex and layered, and coupled with the aforementioned vocals of the leadsinger, Jeremy Enigk, Diary truly strikes a chord with fans of emo music. The songs flow together perfectly, yet each one is distinct...
Of particular note, In Circles, Seven and 48 stand out as the best pieces on this album. The closest musical parallel that I can draw is to some of the work of Smashing Pumpkins, although SDRE thankfully lacks Billy Corgan's ego and the band's overt teen appeal.
Fortunately, SDRE has a fantastic album coming out on June 20th (I had the pleasure to listen to a promotional copy) and fans of Diary are in for a treat as SDRE has re-embraced their earlier musical style. The band had broken up in 1995, with the bassist and drummer joining Foo Fighters and Jeremy Enigk pursuing a solo career, but the band has come back together to provide listeners with more of their passionate and intense fare...
Diary is an essential record for fans of emo-rock and you will likely enjoy this album if you count Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World Mineral or even Radiohead among your favorites...
