godspeede's Full Review: Vientos en Libertad by Tatiana
When it was released in 1990, "Vientos en Libertad" represented a genuine watershed in Tatiana's career. Heretofore managed by her not inconsiderably talented mother, who successful oversaw her rise as a teen star, Tatiana now collaborated for the first time with her future husband, Andres Puentes, to present a more adult image and product. Accordingly, her new album showed far more diversity of style than before. Moreover, this change was accompanied by a publicity campaign announcing a "new" grownup Tatiana, one who was "provocativa, sensual y atrevida", and one who was more than willing to pose for far sexier (though never vulgar) pictures than before.
The change was noted in a number of contemporary reviews of the album. including one in the Mexican celebrity magazine, "Ritmo". The reviewer applauded Tatiana's decision to try out more challenging and diverse materials, and praised highly both the production values and the choice of songs. His only downbeat note was that he felt that Tatiana's voice was still too nasal and as yet lacked polish. Both of which, he felt, were more than compensated for by the her charming singing style.
On the whole this reviewer's opinion seems well-founded. The production is outstanding, and the songs are strong and very diverse ranging from funky ("Por Ultima Vez")to Latin ("Et Ritmo de Tu Corazon") to straight torch ballads ("Un Amor Distinto")and more pop oriented material ("Quisiera").It is also fair to say that while at times Tatiana pushes the envelope of her capacities,it also must be said that she tackles extremely difficult songs to sing, and that she does this confidently and successfully. By the time of her next album a year later, she had grown sufficiently to control her voice's nasalness and basic power.
Moreover, Tatiana excels at the kind of pop/rock material that she was used to, and the song "Si Estoy Cerca de Ti" in particular is BRILLIANT! Wonderfully produced, with an infectuous beat, and with Tatiana singing it perfectly (!), it is one the best dance tunes I have ever heard! Apparently it is based upon an English-language song entitled "When I Look in Your Eyes", but my research has not found any reference to this song in the American charts. I would buy this album for this song alone.
Like many more diverse works by other artists, "Vientos en Libertad" requires several listenings to appreciate. I have found it to grow with each hearings, and it has revealed itself to be a superior effort. Once again, like everything that Tatiana has done, it has her special charisma that transcends language and description. The good news is that "Vientos en Liberetad" is one of more available of Tatiana's pre-1995 CDs, and with just a little effort you should be able to obtain it; if you like modern music, I would urge you to do so.
