An Untarnished View From One Of Today's Teens (Reply to this comment)
by sean1983
I bought Tiffany's debut album only a couple years ago. Since I was only about four of five years old when she was at the peak of her popularity, I can't remember seeing her in the media when she was in the public eye. In a way, this gives me an untarnished view of the album, as I am not a victim of overexposure. In addition, it helps that I am a fan of the synthesizer-keyboard production absent in most of the music of my generation.
What can I say about this album: it is a classic of the late-80's dance-pop genre. Among the favorites are the ballad Danny, which has a sorrowful, atmospheric melody, with Tiffany giving a strong, imploring vocal performance. Feelings Of Forever is gold, as Tiffany's vocals successfully interact with the backing harmonies and crisp keyboard. Johnny's Got The Inside Move features a Janet Jackson-esque keyboard track, and Tiffany sounds like she is having a lot of fun. The great quality of the material is such, also including Should've Been Me, Kid On A Corner, and Promises Made, that it makes one forget that, oh wait, the two biggest hit singles, I Think We're Alone Now and Could've Been, conclude the album.
This album is perfect...almost. The only track that I don't really care, and this is a minor complaint, for is I Saw Him Standing There. Forgetting for the moment that it is a Beatles song (this isn't the beef), it suffers because of overproduction, evident in the multi-layered wash of synth-keyboards that are largely toned down on the other songs (hey, I said I like synths and keyboards, but only as long as they are not overwrought). Tiffany's vocal performance, though strong, can't save the song from that fact.
As a 19 year-old and huge fan of most 80's music, I'm glad I took a chance on this album instead of dismissing it as horribly fluffy teen-pop. I found that it is a strong, infectiously fun album that I always seem to have playing (even right now). The tricky part is finding Tiffany's other albums, though I found The Color Of Silence and Dreams Never Die today after a lengthy search. I still can't find Hold An Old Friend's Hand and New Inside after all this time (pun intended). My rating for Tiffany's debut album is 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

I had this tape and totally loved it back in my elemntary school days. And I'm pretty sure if I heard the music again I could sing all the words and dance all her moves once again.

I was working at a concert arena when I was in high school; and I worked during a Tiffany concert. Michael Bolton opened for her.
I still wake up screaming.
Great review, though.

was a big Tiffany fan in those days so I am very familiar with her music...my all time favorite is Could've Been...with Hold An Old Friend's Hand following in as a close second.
Great review! It has earned you a place on my WOT...
