Not Easy To Find, But Worth the Search
Written: Jul 01 '01
Pros:Excellent example of what 90's heavy metal should have been.
Cons:Very, very hard to find.
The Bottom Line: If you only own one Heavy Metal (hair band) CD, this should be it.
There was downright fighting the day that some poor fool turned in his copy of Tyketto Don’t Come Easy for half in cash or 2/3 in trade at the used CD emporium where I worked. Dan said "Hey, look what just came in." Mike and I shouted "I want it!" at nearly the same moment. Mike was about a millisecond ahead of me and after some shouting, Dan said "Christine, Mike called it first, you can have the next one."
"But Dan!" I wailed. "There might not be another one!" Rare as hen’s teeth these things are. Dan just gave me the look and, when another copy came in he gave it to me. Double bonus, great CD and free to boot.
The only song you have a prayer of remembering off this CD is Seasons. If you were alive and listening to hard rock in 1991 you’d say "Oh I love that song." It was a huge hit, but for some reason the rest of the album fizzled and the follow up is so lost to history that Epinions doesn’t even list it (but I have a precious copy also given to me by Dan. I still love you, Dan!)
Forever Young
Good grinding guitar and a nice tempo change right up front. They seem to be doing a Wings / Tesla thing and there’s no harm in that. The lyrics are smart and poetic. "Two hungry hearts / Out on the road / We’ll always be / Forever young." "She's crying / Two worlds collide/ Can’t take anymore / He’s denyin’ / The kick inside."
Wings
I admire the drumming on this song. It just throbs under the surface keeping the whole mess together. And Danny Vaughn has one of the most wonderful, soaring voices I’ve heard, including Steve Perry.
Burning Down Inside
"Play the game of indecision / come what may / she knows it isn’t just his voice / on the line / One final time / She hears thunder." Without the excellent music, I would love this song because the lyrics are beautiful. But then they added the music and it became fabulous. Aggressive drumming, driving bass, delicate keyboard, Danny Vaughn singing his little heart out.
Seasons
You’d know it if you heard it. Starts light and acoustic, turns hard electric, lyrics smarter than they should be. Yea, that’s the one.
Standing Alone
"Staring out the window / Like I‘m waiting for a change / If I stared long enough / I’d see it when it came." If I don’t stop there, I’ll end up just quoting entire song. Every word perfectly placed and emotionally delivered. Pretty ballad that turns power ballad before it’s over. Easily as strong as "Faithfully."
Lay Your Body Down
I think this was meant to be a hit. It’s out of that mold. You know, the White Lion / London Quireboys / Riverdogs / Extreme mold. It’s just a little better and a little smarter.
Walk On Fire
Another beauty. I know why these guys weren’t just stunningly popular, they were too good. Head and shoulders about everybody else in talent, skill and ability.
Nothing But Love
Another hard rock (should have been) hit.
Strip Me Down
I think it was a requirement that every album from this era have a raunchy song on it. Well, this is Tyketto’s raunchy song (couldn’t guess from the title, could you?) It’s appropriately raunchy without straying into Guns’n’Roses territory. More erotica than porn.
Sail Away
There’s a Styx song by the same name. They are as different as night and day. This Sail Away is a positive, upbeat traveling song. And they do that cool Wings tempo switch thing in the middle.
If I had to flee my house tomorrow because some evil nutcase had assumed power (no further commentary) and I could only take what I could carry in a back pack, you can bet that Tyketto’s 2 CDs would be there along with the wedding pictures and the love letters my husband has written me. If you ever come across a copy of this CD buy it, immediately. You won’t be disappointed.
