Freak369's Full Review: Slow, Deep, And Hard by Type O Negative
Long before the little goth girlies put leaves in their hair, painted their lips a dark crimson hue and dreamed of having Peter Steele romance them, there was another side of Type O Negative in full effect. Before the songs of eternal love that conquer even death, scantily clad vixens dancing under the Halloween moon and cover versions of Summer Breeze and Cinnamon Girl ... yes, all the way back to 1991 ... there was a darker beast playing the small clubs in New York. Yes there were haunting keyboard pieces and guitar work that still echoes in the newer stuff but make no mistake about this, if you are into the erotic noir side of Type O, chances are - at first glance and upon the first listen - you wont find this release the least bit appealing. While it might take a little bit of time for some fans to warm up to this CD, eventually it happens because the more you listen to it, the more you see how the group has evolved over the years in the areas of lyrics, music and even vocals. Since Peter Steele garnishes most of the attention from the females due to his haunting voice - I can say that the songs on this will strike a true note of fear into them and make them think twice about wishing and wanting to know him biblically.

Speaking on a neutral plain - putting aside my deep love of the groups music - the song that really takes the cake here is Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty of Infidelity. Its got every aspect of a Type O song - decent lyrics, blistering guitar work, more than a few beat changes and of course women moaning and groaning in ecstasy. Oh yeah and that belabored scream mid way through the song - you have to love that. Lyrically the whole CD is strong but this is the one that got Mr. Steele and company into a sh*tstorm of trouble with the women. For those who are fans of the group youll know that this lead to some of the lyrics that appeared on the Bloody Kisses track We Hate Everyone namely branded sexist and a few other lines. The bottom line about this track is its about getting screwed over when you are in a relationship. All you have to do is read the words of the song to see that it could apply to just about any guy thats ever busted his woman screwing around on him .. but just reading the words isnt enough - you have to hear how the song develops, the growling vocals and of course Sals incredible drum work. I may have had some personal differences with Sal but I will admit that he was an incredible drummer.
You went to LAmour Saturday night
Red nails and lipstick, dressed two sizes too tight
His tongue down your throat, his hand up your skirt
Im a man, but it still hurts
Theres a lot of rage and anger on this release, Johnny Kelly summed it up best on the Type O After Dark video release when he said - ha ha - that Peter summed it up best saying that Type O is like sonic therapy. I am sure that it was a cathartic experience to be able to take the pain of walking in on your girlfriend with two other guys and put that to music - and in a lot of ways fans can identify with some of the content of the CD. I wont say that this is their best effort but it doesnt flat out suck - think of Type O as an onion ... its got a lot of layers to peel through, some sweet, some spicy but all of them tasty.. Most of the guitar work from Kenny is fat and thick with only a few hard solos. Joshs stuff seems to get pushed by the way side but when you do get to hear it, its some of his more intense material. As far as the beat, former drummer Sal Abruscato brings a hard edged and fast paced sound to the music. The vocals are harder, grittier and are more like shouts and angry little outbursts than they are singing - so if you are looking for that softer side of Peter, stick with October Rust. I am still wondering where the hell the bass is on this - I even checked my stereo set up to see if there was a cable loose or if someone was playing around with my preferences ... Peter .. what happened to the bass on this sweetie?
There is a lot of hate here, that much I will be brutally honest about. Most of it is about wanting to get revenge when someone you love screws you over. Its happened to everyone and it sucks. Regardless of whether they just pick up and leave, you bust them doing the deed with someone else or word gets back to you that your significant other is an equal opportunity destroyer. Prelude To Agony still has the dark feel of this CD but you can see the birth of Bloody Kisses here - those long drawn out guitar riffs, teasing beats that sneak up on you then a massive eruption - sort of like foreplay and sex if its done right. The intro on this is what tricks you into thinking that its going to be a slower track but that all changes when theres a crossover. Laced with bits and pieces but never the whole image - it leaves a lot up to the mind and imagination of the listener. After all, that is what good music is all about. Painting a picture but leaving the details up to the individual.. One song that really smokes is Gravitational Constant, I am not going to sit here with the character map open trying to type out the complete mathematical title of the song so cut me some slack. This lacks a little when it comes to lyrical content but its the music that really blows you away. Personally, this is some of Kennys best work - I wont go into detail as to why I think its some of his best but once you hear it I am sure you will agree, the boy has got some talented fingers [get your mind out of the gutter]. This is the third longest track on the CD and like the others, it has a lot of different layers of music, vocal approaches and themes to contend with.
Ive got a problem, a problem with hate
I cant go on dragging this weight
A cold steel hand that wont let go
Acid fill thoughts out of control
The Bottom Line
This was released in 1991 so its 14 years old ... take it with a grain of salt and youll be fine. This was the first official studio release from Type O Negative and while it is a far cry from their efforts on Life Is Killing Me, its something that you need to have in order to fully appreciate how far the group has come. About the only downside to this is the damn lyrics. I have the cassette and the CD of this and the lyrics are hard as hell to read because they are all run together and theres not a single freakin comma or period to be found. As I said, I may have had some personal differences with Sal and his general attitude as to how the group was progressing but that doesnt mean that I discredit him as a drummer. Sure Johnny [Kelly] has added a lot of depth to the music and built on what Sal started but I seriously doubt that Type O would have evolved in the way that they have if he were still in the group. But hey, thats just my two cents ... I just write the reviews ... they make the music.
