With today's digital devices you would think that all music would sound great, right? Well, this is rarely the case. Many a great song is ruined by the way it was recorded. Although most music is made in this underachieving boring old way, there are some performers demanding more.
Enter Roger Waters: Amused to Death, what could be the greatest recording ever to be read by a laser, thanks to Q-sound technology.
Amused to Death is a lyrical masterpiece like all of Roger Waters' works, and Jeff Beck's guitar play is beautifully moving, second to none. As with all of Roger's music it is the extras behind the music, dogs barking, phones ringing, and cars screaming by that make the difference and Q-sound brings it all to life. I loved the way that the genie's voice is everywhere in the room with power and bass in Three Wishes and the sweet sound of Christmas bells as they rush by on horse and carriage in Too Much Rope.
The thing that I hate about this CD is that it makes most of my other disks dust collectors because I won't listen to them anymore, they just don't sound right. Another dislike is the thing that I like best, the Q-sound recording, it is speaker sensitive, not all speakers will work and some work much better than others. But, since this is not a speaker review I will continue with Amused To Death.
There are two CD's that I would recommend to go with this one, Roger Waters' The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking, for story telling and great instrument work, and Pink Floyd's The Final Cut for sonic reproduction (this CD is recorded in Holograghic technology).
In conclusion if you like Pink Floyd, you will absolutely LOVE Roger Waters' Amused To Death for its storytelling alone, the music is icing on the cake.
