criteeker's Full Review: No Foolin'! by Katie Webster
This feisty Texas-born, piano playin', hard core singin' lady of the blues is someone to treasure. Her hard-hitting lyrics will make you laugh, stomp your feet and become suspicious of your mate. She sings from experience and her heart.
"A Little Meat on the Side" (3:07) Just what the title infers...if you don't treat your mate right, they're gonna look somewhere else for it. "You better treat your woman like you treat yourself, or you'll find me runnin' off with somebody else. I need lovin' and I sure need my affection, or I'll find all my good things in the wrong direction." You're darn straight...sound advice for anyone in a relationship.
"I'm Bad" (4:36) One great bad-to-the-bone blues tune. "When I was just a child, young and full of fun. Drive the old men crazy, make all the young boys leave home. Once they taste my sweetness, they can't leave me alone. Cause I'm bad, the whole world knows I'm bad." Katie, you are bad...and so very good! "If ya think I love ya, you're makin' a big mistake. I don't even look around, at the trail of hearts I break." Wow, that is brutal...yet fun. You get the feeling that Muddy Waters had a big influence on this tune.
No Deposit, No Return" (3:57) Now, my love account is over-drawn, someone's been cashing my love checks while I been gone." With all the background singers and the horn section, this disco-era song sounds like a 1970's TV ad for recycling.
"Zydeco Shoes and California Blues" (6:30) Katie reminisces about her days in Louisiana and her move to California in a slow blues tune. C.J. Chenier's accordion accompanies Katie and her keys on the journey. Half way through the tune, it switches to an up-beat honky tonk tune. I imagine her road trip in an old Cadillac while I listen to this tune on my PC.
"Too Much Sugar for a Dime" (4:08) "Child, I thought I had myself a good man, 'til I found out I had TOO much sugar for a dime. I'd come home from work, he had dinner made and house clean. I thought he looked so sexy in that apron and them tight jeans. When it came down to makin' love, I never thought about another. There was no one to compare to my man under the covers. My man was sweet as honey, and that suited me just fine, 'til I found out I had too much sugar for a dime." That's right, her man was a bit effeminate. Great lyrics.
"Hard Lovin' Mama" (4:12) This is the best track on the CD. "If you fool around with me, man, I'll put so much lovin' on you, I'll put goose pimples on your goose pimples." Her lovin' can tame any man! "Well I ain't been mistreated and I ain't been double-crossed, cause when it comes to lovin' Katie knows she's the boss! I'm a hard lovin' mama."
"It's Mighty Hard" (6:30) No, this is not an ad for Viagra.
It's a gospel blues tune. She sings about how lonely life is all alone. Her piano playing saves this almost flat tune.
"Tangled in Your Web" (3:31) The horn section gives this tune a "Cool and the Gang" feel. "Thought I had you all to myself, caught you loving someone else. I forgot and forgave your infidelity, two lovers plus me and now that makes three. You swore you'd love me only, why do you do me wrong? No wonder she's so tough and puts up with none of her lover's BS.
"Those Lonely, Lonely Nights" (5:00) Lonnie Brooks makes his vocals and guitar roar on this 1950s-esque duet. A real toe-tapper you might have heard at a sock hop back in the day.
"Mama Cat Cuttin' No Slack" (3:29) Can we say "Zoot suits" down at the Savoy? Duke Ellington would be proud of this finger-snappin' boogie woogie tune complete with a chorus group. This sounds like a tune from a Broadway show or the film "Chicago." "Play it Kate!"
