Katie Webster is known for her Honky Tonk Blues and her vocal prowess. On this CD, she explores her Boogie Woogie, Sha Boom Doo Whop, Jook Joint, Honky Tonk sides... the blues seems to take a back seat on this mostly highly-charged toe-tappin' CD.
If you like the recipe of Honky Tonk, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and any Soul from the 1960's and 70's, this will be a CD you'll love! Katie is joined by a few "special guests" this time around. The result is nothing short of gold!
"Who's Making Love?" (4:00) "Who's makin' love to your old lady, while you're out makin' love?" Katie Webster and Kim Wilson serve up an up-beat duet among the magic of Robert Cray's guitar, a snappy horn section and hip bass track. Great rendition of a truly classic song.
"Sea of Love" (3:19) "Do you remember when we met? That's the day I knew I'd be your pet." Yeah, I get that a lot. Katie tickles the ivories with such a fervor, makes me wanna do the "underpants dance" on my hardwood floors!
"Black Satin" (3:48) Katie's Honky Tonk piano prowess is silk NOT satin. Here's an instrumental that showcases her fingers doing what they do best! Cool tune.
"After You Get Rid of Me" (5:34) "After you get rid of me, tell me who will your next fool be. I know, I know, I know, I'd love to be the one, love to be the one to tell the other woman so. After all is said and done, Lord knows, you won't be satisfied with anyone but me." Ooooh, Katie, you tell him like it is! A slow-paced, piano bar, bluesy tune.
"Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa(Sad Song)" (2:37) A great Otis Redding tune re-done with Katie's artistry. Sad songs are all she knows... and I thank her for it! That's the blues. This tune is an up-beat rendition of another Soul classic complete with a booming horn section. Joe Sublett's sax punches it up nicely.
"No Bread, No Meat" (4:20) Kim Wilson is back with his gritty vocals and his harmonica. "Look at him. Comin' down the street with his hands in his pockets. I don't know what he's holdin' - sure ain't no money. 'Cause he ain't had no job since 1978." Not only is this a duet with vocals, but their piano vs. harmonica passages are great too. "If you ain't got no bread, you gets no meat HERE!"
"Whoo-Wee Sweet Daddy" (3:18) A gem of a toe-tappin' Jook Joint - Doo Whop tune. Here's a sax vs. piano tug of war capped off with Katie's strong vocals. There I go...doin the Twist on the hardwood floors. Watch me, now!
Go Katie, go!
"Try a Little Tenderness" (4:19) Katie's vocals add a soft touch to a classic Soul tune. Halfway through the tune, it picks up the tempo and becomes a refreshing rendition.
"Hold On to What You Got" (4:34) A slow Doo Whop tune reminiscent of an old Martha and the Vandellas song. "You had better hold on to what you've got. 'Cause if you think no man wants your woman, you just throw her away and you will see. Some man will have her, before you can count, 1...2...3."
"Somebody's on Your Case" (3:10) C'mon, get funky! A cool tune that only gets more golden with the vocals of Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie and Katie and horns..OH MY!
"On the Run" (6:32) Along side a solo piano, Katie reminisces: "Listen ladies. Don't take every woman to be your friend. You know, I did that and it was the biggest mistake I could make in my life. I had this woman living with me, she was wearin' my clothes, eating my food, spendin' my money and sleepin' in my bed. She said, Katie, don't worry about nothin', 'cause when you get ready to go out on the road, I'll take care of everything. That's exactly what she did. She took care of the dog, the cat, my children AND my man." The tempo picks up and she starts to sing. She belts out a blues riff with Bonnie Raitt's golden slide guitar and Kim Wilson's harmonica.
"Lord, I Wonder" (4:03) "I wonder how much longer, I have to sing the blues." I hope it's a very very long time, Katie! She pays homage to all the blues greats (by name) while belting out a solo Honky Tonk piano riff.
Buying advice: This will appeal to Soul, Oldies and Blues lovers alike! Katie's voice, Raitt's and Cray's guitar is a special treat also. I love this CD as much (if not more) as I like Katie's "Two Fisted Mama". This CD is even more consistent and will appeal to a wider variety of people with different musical tastes. Bravo, Katie!
