NICE AND WARM is a forceful blues filled jazzy debut CD by bayou born Louisianan Tab Benoit who isn’t a household word. It's said the CD sold 200,000 and was surprisingly good for a debut blues album. The songs reflect his birthplace with titles like “Voodoo on the Bayou” and a song called “Down in the Swamp.” There is a certain distinct sound that fills this CD, maybe it’s the notes of the guitar, but it is familiar in many tunes.
BORN IN 1967, Benoit was influenced by Buddy Guy, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Albert King. As a youngster he honed his skills and in the early 80’s was a mentor for young blues musicians.
BENOIT’S VOICE is unmistakenly blues, and considered a legendary blues guitarist. He does the vocals, guitars and harmonica are his on this CD. Other instrumentalists are: Steve Bioley on bass, Gregg Bissonette on drums, and Paul English on Hammond and piano. He takes credit for writing most of the songs and does a sultry, sexy bluesy version of the popular “I Put a Spell on You” written by the late Screaming Jay Hawkins. The title track “Nice and Warm” is slower, smooth, sensuous, romantic song as he write: "I can’t wait to get back home where the sun is always nice and warm."
LYRICAL CONTENT is simple, like “Voodoo on the Bayou” an upbeat rock/blues song about goin’ crawfishin’ Mardi Gras and Blacken Voodoo. “Down in the Swamp” ….you know that’s where I’ll be. “She’s Out There Somewhere” written by Buddy Guy is also a faster tune with the distinct guitar sound. “The Killing Floor” a danceable beat about being gone ...you got me on the killing floor. “Bone Pickin” ……this dog’s got a bone to pick…
BLIND DATE - I had, what you might call, a Blind Date with this CD, I took a chance on it and and it turned out splendid. For someone who doesn’t know too much about Blues, I highly recommend Tab Benoit. He is on his fifth or sixth CD by now. Try this, it can be a great introductory to a classic wonderful genre of music. ....MzRizz.
