alexisbobexis's Full Review: 30 Anos by Mercedes Sosa
Mercedes Sosa - The Voice
If you have never heard Mercedes Sosa's voice, it is truly amazing. She has an incredibly rich and powerful voice that is complemented by the traditional Latin American instruments -- mostly guitars, drums, and on occasion pan flutes. In her signature song, "Gracias a la Vida", the delivery is penetrating.
Don't speak Spanish?
The vocal and guitar music alone are beautiful enough that even without an understanding of the lyrics, it would still be a wonderful album. For non-native speakers (like myself), I was disappointed that the CD jacket did not include lyrics which often makes for easier translation. On another note, however, Sosa sings with such clarity that it is fairly easy to pick out what she is saying with knowledge of Spanish.
Overall
I highly recommend listening to the album for its upbeat yet mellow music. There is some diversity in the CD with some songs being played live (some with other famous Latin American musicians). This Argentine folk music provides a sometimes needed antidote to pop music for me.
