rebelgrrl's Full Review: Calculated by Heavens To Betsy
Heavens to Betsy's Calculated is definitely characteristic of the Kill Rock Stars label. Heavens to Betsy is a duo made up of Tracy Sawyer and Corin Tucker. They bring the riot girl attitude to 12 hypnotic and catchy tracks.
What sets Heavens to Betsy apart from any other girl band is Corin Tucker's unmistakable voice. Tracy Sawyer plays bass and drums, configuring a musical style that mixes an indie sound with hardcore punk. Corin's vocals shriek revolution and whisper out melancholy throughout the album, giving Calculated an eerie sort of sound. It's never pop punk or anything annoying.
I'd compare Heavens to Betsy to Bikini Kill for a couple of reasons. They're both very versatile musically. They manage to give the perfect combination of hardcore and softcore on the same album. Kathleen Hanna and Corin Tucker both have incredibly strong voices. However, Heavens to Betsy lacks the noise and confusion that presents itself on Bikini Kill's recordings. (i.e. you can understand what they're saying) The songs on Calculated are catchy and have a riot girl feel, but it won't scare the guys. The songs are more about society and its problems as a whole, not women vs. men.
Anyone who likes harder chick punk will love Heavens to Betsy. If you're a girl and you consider yourself punk or indie, this is a definitive album and you must have it. Go somewhere and grab it while you can since the band isn't together anymore. It will never ever come out of your CD player.
