Torn_Willows's Full Review: American Thighs by Veruca Salt
Veruca Salt's 1994 debut album "American Thighs" is an awesome rock/alternative cd fueled by the sweet yet brutal vocals of Louise Post and Nina Gordon. The two leading front women of the group really know how to write amazing songs, play a mean guitar, and belt out some of the best songs I have ever heard. This is definitely the first Veruca Salt album a new fan needs to get because if you get their latest release before hand, it will be hard to see that "American Thighs" is a great album, I should know because I got "American Thighs" after getting the ones after it.
"American Thighs" is a great 13 track album, and in my opinion it was before it's time in 1994 because back then the music was different styled than today's music. The songs on this album can be credited with bringing on the change in women's rock music for the 90's because these women were giving their all before most of the newest female rockers had gotten their record deal. The album starts out with the awesome song "Get Back" that has a great line in it. "The more you want it, the less you're going to get back." That is one of the truest lines I have ever heard, because most people know that to be the truth. "Seether" is another great song because it is fast paced and energetic, bringing with it a scream or two. Other great songs on this album are "All Hail Me", "Spiderman '79" and "Forsythia".
For a recommendation to "American Thighs" I would definitely say all of Veruca Salt's new stuff, as well as some of Hole's work both new and old. The voices of Louise and Nina are great and produce a rock sound that is their own so it is semi-hard to give any kind of good advice.
