I regret that I haven't had the time to be much of an active and responsive member of the epinions community, but I had to pop my head in here and say, "Thank god, I'm not alone!!"
You're not the only one whose hand hovers over the skip button when listening to The Bends. I've taken myself back to it again and again, listening intently with headphones to try and figure out what all the five star hysteria is all about. I think it is a good, solid album in the 3 - 4 star range. I own it. At times it's stunningly beautiful (Bullet Proof). But it's not brilliant or groundbreaking and too much of the songwriting is repetitive and mediocre. Whether or not repetitive mediocrity is part of Radiohead's "brilliant master plan" makes no difference to my ears.
Courageous review and well done.
I'll stop here to take shelter from the angry masses...

Its been so long since i've been here, i thought w/o was world order. Oh well...
This for me has been a year of Radiohead. I had "Okay computer," then all of a sudden I didn't hear anything about them, or was not listening, then years went buy and I bought Hail to The Theif, then bought the years before. I became obsessed with the music. I didn't even know what they looked like and didn't want to know because I just wanted to enjoy the music with no preconceived notions. Then after months of constant listening, I looked them up, and was very pleased. I drew a nice picture of Peter, the lead singer. I am over the fan mongering, but still listening. Now I'm listening to the Bends, but have been listening more to International music.

I know what you mean about a couple of the songs being a bit bland, but all of the songs build up to some type of crescendo, which is what I love about this album. For instance "Nice Dream." I think it's rather boring until the bridge when it rocks out on Johnny's distinctive and innovative guitar style. I think it is very musically sophisticated and interesting. Good review, even though I disagree with some aspects.

Crazy thing about Radiohead is just how much attention they got by putting on this kind of an act. I still can't believe that human beings can be as weird as these guys sometimes.
I actually like Bones although it could be a little faster.
At any rate, better get my blankets to the basement and get some sleep before I start sizzling up here!
Take care,
FP
