Without a doubt, this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE CD!!! I own over 1000 CD's, cassettes, and LP's. I have probably owned and traded, sold, and threw away another 200. I listen to all sorts of music including metal, rock, hip hop, ska, R+B, blues, rap etc, etc. This is the CD I pick out almost daily to listen to.
Clutch writes some of the best songs I have ever heard. The songs are a mixture of metal, funk, and rock if you had to categorize the music, which I find difficult for Clutch.
This is their second studio release and it far exceeds their first release "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes, and Undeniable Truths." It seems they were still searching for their unique style on that release but they definitely found it on "Clutch."
It starts off with the nautical themed "Big News I" and "Big News II." These songs have heavy riffs of bass and guitar and mesmerize you from the start. "Rock and Roll Outlaw" introduces you to their unique lyrics with "...you can rock it like sir sisyphus, but even in it's genesis it's really quite ridiculous, letric hobo so now you know not to clock the weeble wobble hot rod gang, revelator big bang." I have no idea what Neil Fallon is trying to say, if anything, in this phrase. The next four songs tell stories and are my favorites on the CD. From alien conspiracies in "Escape From the Prison Planet" to finding long lost assasins in "I Have the Body of John Wilkes Booth" these are awesome songs with great beats and heavy riffs. The remainder of the CD is just as great but does not stand out like the first 7 songs(total 13). The last song, "Tim Sult vs. The Greys" is just an instrumental jam and really leaves you wanting more Clutch.
The music heavy and has absolutely overpowering bass lines and guitar riffs. No band sounds like Clutch and no other band could write these songs.
