Dave Grohl is a great songwriter. These are just amazing pop-punk songs, really. Simple, straightforward, with some amazing drum lines. The recordings are defintiely raw, but that just adds to the appeal of this album. In was released in 1995, right after Nirvana's breakup, which makes it kind of hard to categorize. But who really cares -- the music is awesome, and that's all that really matters.

You can tell the Nirvana influence (for obvious reasons) but this is definitely not just another Nirvana album. It's hard rock, but its much less "punk."
This is not a deep, thoughtful album -- don't expect Simon and Garfunkel lyrically. What you get with the Foo Fighters' first release is a high-energy, explosive mix of pop and hard rock.
