opal611's Full Review: Twelve Deadly Cyns...And Then Some by Cyndi Lauper
This is my first epinion about a CD, so I don't really know what I should say about it...but here goes!
After growing up during the 80's, for some reason two songs symbolize 80's music in my mind. One of them is "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. (The other is "Karma Chameleon" by Boy George...but that's unimportant to this review.) Anyways, one of my friends had "Twelve Deadly Cyns" in her collection, so I decided to listen to it one day. To my surprise, Cyndi Lauper had more than just this one good song.
Although I don't like (or recognize) all of the songs on this "Anthology" album, in general, this is a pretty good CD. There are many other "greatest hits" albums that have more well known hits, but this is a good CD for Cyndi Lauper fans. I'm not a huge fan, but I love some of the songs. I haven't listened to her other CDs, so I can't really compare them.
Here are the songs on the CD, and some comments about them:
1. I'm Gonna Be Strong (1977)--According to the album cover, this song was previously unreleased. It's not one of my favorite songs on the CD, involving some sort of break-up.
2. Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1979)--As I said earlier, this song represents the 80's to me, although it was actually recorded in 1979. I remember sitting up as a little kid and watching the video for this on "Friday Night Videos" on one of the rare occasions when my cousins were baby-sitting me.
3. Money Changes Everything (1978)--I don't really like this song, although it's kind of catchy. It, once again, is about some sort of break-up.
4. Time After Time (1983)--This is one of my favorite songs on the CD. It's from the same album as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" called "She's So Unusual". It's about the confusing turmoil of some sort of relationship. She will always be there waiting.
5. She Bop (1983)--I've heard rumors that this song is about female self-pleasurement...although I don't know for sure.
6. All Through the Night (1982)--This is a nice song about spending the night with someone, during "this precious time when time is new".
7. Change of Heart (1986)--This song is about someone who is now just friends with someone, sitting there waiting for the other person to have a "change of heart" and for some sort of relationship to develop. The relationship may or may not ever develop, but she just waits. This hits kind of close to home for me.
8. True Colors (1986)--I love this song. I believe it was used by Kodak film company around 1988 to go along with their sponsorship of the Olympics. It's about loving someone for what's down deep inside...their "true colors". There is another version of this song by Phil Collins, which I also recommend.
9. What's Going On (1970)--This song was originally sung by Marvin Gaye, and I like his version better.
10. I Drove All Night (1989)--This song is about an attempt to drive all night to be with someone she loves. I like both the song and the message behind it. No distance can separate true love.
11. That's What I Think (1993)--This song talks about forgetting all of the problems of the world when she's with the person she loves. That person makes her forget about everything else. Great song.
12. Sally's Pigeons (1993)--This is a nostalgic song about growing up. I don't really like it, compared to some of her other songs.
13. Hey Now (Girl's Just Want to Have Fun) (1994)--This is another previously unreleased song. It was featured in the movie "To Wong Foo". As you can probably tell from the title, it's a remake of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". I like this version, perhaps even better than the original version. It is borderline reggae, although reggae fanatics would probably kill me for saying that.
14. Come On Home (1994)--This is the last of the three previously unreleased songs on the album.
