You couldn’t go through the 1980’s without listening to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. This song is probably the anthem of every girl’s life. The album “Twelve Deadly Cyns…And Then Some” by Cyndi Lauper has a variety of Cyndi’s most popular songs to some not so well known songs. I remember the song “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was in the movie of the same name back in the 80’s. Cyndi has a unique voice that makes her music one of a kind. And who could forget her wild clothes and hair.

The song “I’m Gonna Be Strong” is a sad break up song. It’s about a girl whose man is breaking up with her and she is telling herself to be strong about it. Even though she wants to tell him not to go and is crying in the inside. The song is a slow, beautiful song with wonderful lyrics and background music. Cyndi does a wonderful job with this song; it’s probably one of the best songs on this album. “When you say it’s the end, I’ll hand you a line, I’ll smile and say don’t you worry it’s fine and you’ll never know darling after you kiss me goodbye, how I’ll break down and cry…”
The song “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” has to be the song of my teen years. It’s an upbeat song that makes you want to get up and dance or song along. It’s about a girl who even though she is a rebel at heart, she wants to have fun while she can. But, she still loves her parents and they are still number one in her life. “The phone rings in the middle of the night, my father yells what you gonna do with your life, oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one, but girls just want to have fun”.
The song “Money Changes Everything” is another song about a bad relationship, but with upbeat music and lyrics. It’s about a woman who tells her man she is leaving him for someone else. He says how could you do this, we said we would be together forever. She tells him she found someone who has money and gives her the things she wants. Like the song says money changes everything and when you see money, extravagant gifts you want that and could end up leaving a good thing behind. How could you do it, we swore each other everlasting love, She said, well yeah I know but when we did, there was one thing we weren’t really thinking of and that’s money”.
The song “Time After Time” is a sad love song. The lyrics and music are wonderful and convey an important message. It’s about a woman who loves her man but she doesn’t feel she is loved back. She remembers the old days of them together, but through it all she tells him she will always be there for him. ”Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you, caught up in circles of confusion is nothing new, Flashback-warm nights almost left behind, suitcases of memories, time after time”.
The song “She Bop” is rumored to be about female self-pleasurement. If Cyndi wanted to be noticed for more then her wild clothes and hair she did just that with this song. Even though the song is racy, it has a good beat nonetheless. “I’m picking up good vibration, oop she bop, do I want to go out with a lions roar, huh yea, I want to go south and get me some more”
The song “All Through The Night” is a slow love song that tells of a new relationship. The lyrics are wonderful and Cyndi did a great job singing it. The musical background is wonderful and adds to the beauty of the song. It’s about a new relationship and they are wondering if it will last for more then that one night they are together or end when they sun rises. “We have no past we won’t reach back, keep with me forward through the night, all through the night this precious time when time is new”.
The song “Change Of Heart” has an upbeat feel to it and is a beautiful song that makes you want to get up and dance and sing along. It tells about a woman who loves a friend of hers and is waiting for him to have a change of heart and take the relationship further. The instrumental solos are wonderful in this song. “Here I am just like I said I would be, I’m your friend just like you said it should be, did you think I would stand here and lie as our moment was passing us by”.
The song “True Colors” is another of my favorites and is probably one of Cyndi’s most popular and well-known songs. It’s about a love that surpasses what on the outside of a person and she loves him for his ‘true colors’, what’s inside. It could also be a song to tell family you will always be there for them no matter what they do. They are loved unconditionally. This is a wonderful song with great lyrics and tells an important message that you should be yourself. “I see your true colors shining through, I see your true colors and that’s why I love you so don’t be afraid to let them show, your true colors are beautiful like a rainbow”.
The song “What’s Going On” is a beautiful song that pleads with the world to stop the wars and to take a look around to see what is going on around us. It’s relaying a strong and important message that we need to help one another and stop the suffering. “Mother, mother there’s too many of us crying, brother, brother, brother there’s far too many of us dying, you know we’ve got to find a way to bring some lovin’ here today”.
The song “I Drove All Night” is a beautiful love song for lovers who are far apart. It tells of how two people are far apart but would drive all night just so they can spend one night together. The lyrics and music are wonderful. This is a great song to remind someone no matter how far apart you two are that you still love them. “I drove all night to get to you, is that alright I drove all night crept into your room, woke you from your sleep to make love to you, is that alright I drove all night”.
The song “That’s What I Think” has a different sound then other songs on this album. This is not one of my favorites, but it has an ok beat and lyrics. It tells about no matter how bad things get in the world you can just think about your loved one and everything is better. “Sometimes I think things are overwhelming sometimes I think I don’t know what I’ll do, but I forget about the world and everything around me when I think about you”.
The song “Sally’s Pigeons” is not one of the best songs on the album. It’s too slow for me but does have a good message. It tells about childhood memories and having fun with your best friend. As times goes on her friend announces she is pregnant and she never sees her again. “On the dresser sits a frame with a photograph, two little girls in ponytails some twenty years back, she left one night with just a nod”.
The song “Come On Home” has a reggae feel to it and as a nice upbeat sound to it. It’s not one of my favorites on the album. It tells about no matter how far you are form home you can always come back. You always have a family who loves you and will welcome you back with open arms. “Come on home when the road that you’ve been walking gets too long, don’t be scared in case the grass you thought was greener isn’t there, you can come on home”.
There is also a remix of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. I think the original version is much better. I don’t care for too many remixes anyways.
I recommend Cyndi Lauper's "Twelve Deadly Cyns...And Then Some" to anyone who likes songs that make you want to get up and dance and loves the music of the 80’s. The album “Twelve Deadly Cyns…And Then Some has mix of upbeat songs, love songs and songs that make you think about what is going on around you.
