LynnSchneider's Full Review: I'm with Stupid by Aimee Mann
Everyone raves about Aimee Mann, and in fact, as I write this in early 2001, I believe she is nominated for multiple Grammy awards (and other music awards) for her latest album and her songwriting.
I've been listening to Aimee since her Til Tuesday days. In fact, I listened to the "Voices Carry" and "Welcome Home" albums so much that most of it is permanently (and happily) embedded in my brain.
Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that "I'm With Stupid" will not occupy the neighboring brain cells.
I have really given this album a chance. I listened to it a half-dozen times over the course of two months. Hard as I try, I just don't like it.
I'm not one of these people who listens to elevator music or is stuck in a decade or a genre. I have very eclectic and varied tastes. I write songs and poetry myself and I hate to criticize, but....."I'm With Stupid" is a downright DEPRESSING album. I mean, if you want to bring your mood down, just pop this album into your CD player. Only one song is minimally upbeat.
Now don't get me wrong. I have written my share of depressing songs and poems about love and loss. But an entire album about bad relationships and fights...it's just too much conflict and sadness for me. Heck, if I tried to present this album (as an unknown artist) to a record company, I doubt I'd get a recording contract. Aimee is lucky that she has friends in high places.
Somehow, also, hearing Aimee sing, "You f*cked it up..." (lyrics which open the album) just sounds awful. To me, she comes across as the perpetually scorned and bitter fragile female who just can't find someone to love. After a while, it just gets old! Every time I listen to this album, I think, "Somebody PLEASE get this woman some Prozac and a jet ski!"
I really hate to say these things about Aimee Mann because I do believe that she is a talented singer and songwriter. And in general I like her voice. I'll continuing listening to her music. But THIS album....just not one of my favorites. Sorry, Aimee!
