jplastinumb's Full Review: Empty by God Lives Underwater
For anyone that has never listened or heard of GLU (god lives underwater) this would be the album to hear first. The second of their 4 releases this album is the strongest. There is not one bad song on the whole CD. GLU made up of Jeff Turzo and David Reilly really found thier niche on this album and it shows. It is a good mix of David's strong song writing, lyrics and unique vocals all decostructed and mixed with some elements of electronic music by Turzo. For those of you who do not know this and all GLU albums are written and recorded at home, but it doesn't show on this album (or any glu album). The song "No More Love" got quite a bit of radio play and then the album dissappeared into obscurity, but glu built a large rabid underground following.
This album is perfect for just being angry, heartbroken, lonely...but it is also very beautiful and energetic at the same time. GLU is great at taking pop style hooks and melodies and incorporating it into thier style of music (which has been called everything from industrial, electronic, pop, rock, et al). You could play this album in a club or in your car or just listen to it alone. I have owned this album 5-6 times over the years and to this day listen to it everyday and it never gets old. I have yet to find a better album.
Lyrically I think GLU writes some of the most heartfelt and relateable lyrics out there and even though their influences (of which depeche mode is one major one)contributed to their sound no one influence stands out..GLU are by far a category of their own.
If I had to pick a few favorites off this album they would be "don't know how to be", "Tortoise", and "Still".
