losingsunset's Full Review: Boys for Pele by Tori Amos
Tori Amos..a fiery red-headed piano-playing goddess! This was my second Tori CD, after purchasing her recent Tales of a Librarian album. At the time, I had no clue I was picking up her best album to date. I simply saw that it was the one with the most tracks. And plus, the album cover is great! Tori with a gun in her hand and playing footsies with a snake? What's not to love? This, I believe, is her most cryptic album to date. So, let's look at the tracks! Yes all 18 of them!
Track 1: Beauty Queen/Horses What a lovely little song we have here! An intro with Tori singing "Heyyy...Sheeee's a beauty queen." Then onto Horses. I'd give my hand to play piano like she does in this song. Wait, that wouldn't work...anyways, supposedly it was a sequel to her earlier track "Winter" on her Little Earthquakes album. Overall, a pretty song. Rating: 4/5
Track 2: Blood Roses A harpsichord and bells make up this angst-ridden song that sounds like it belongs in the Medieval Period. She sounds pretty mad at someone. I really loved this song at first, but I discovered better tracks. Rating: 3/5
Track 3: Father Lucifer Gorgeous piano, trumpets, and Tori's overlapping voices make up this song. She whispers, "Nothing's gonna stop me from floating" In one specific part, it sounds like there are 3 different Tori's singing. This song is constantly on replay on my stereo. Rating: 5/5
Track 4: Professional Widow Whoa, now this is one angry Tori! She sounds very emotional in this harpsichord and guitar hybrid. Very good for one of those days that you need to yell..but this song can give you a headache...trust me..very good though! Rating: 4.5/5
Track 5: Mr Zebra This piano and horn ensemble is a pretty little intro to the next track, Marianne. Sounds like a children's lullaby. Rating: 5/5!
Track 6: Marianne At first, it seems like just a filler song. Trust me, THIS IS NOT A FILLER! This piano song is about one of Tori's friends that committed suicide. I play this when I'm angry or sad..and then I just cry..a very sad and emotional song. Beautiful and cryptic. Awesome string section too! Rating: 5/5
Track 7: Caught a Lite Sneeze A constantly looping drum beat with a harpsichord arrangement creates this powerful song. She sings, "Buildings...tumbling down...didn't know our love was so small..." Sounds about a crush that you know you can never have. I feel sort of comforted when I feel this song. This song is probably one of the best on the album and was very popular with radio stations when it first came out. Rating: 5/5
Track 8: Muhammad My Friend Whoa! This song just seems to keep coming back to me! I love it! It's an absolutely lovely track that has her on her Bose (piano) and a harmonica in the best part of the song where she sings, " Ashre, Ashre, Ashre, and if I lose my cracker jacks in the tidal wave, I've got a place in the pope's rubber robe." Rating: 5/5
Track 9: Hey Jupiter You know, I never really got into this song until I truly listened to it. It's beautiful, really it is, but don't play it over and over again! It will ruin the song like it did for me...now it's a skipper. Rating: 3.9/5
Track 10: Way Down A short and sweet song; it features piano and a...gospel chorus? Yup. But that's Tori for you, eh? Rating: 3.5/5
Track 11: Little Amsterdam I've tried to like this song...I really tried! But no matter what, it will always seem annoying to me. She whines on and on and the sound in the background is quite frustrating...gave me a headache. But I give her points for sounding convincing. Rating: 3/5
Track 12: Talula Yay! A good song! A short little intro of "He's chasing tornadoes and I'm just waiting calmly." and then it's off to the harpsichord! A banjo playing in the background makes this a truly odd song, but I love it nonetheless. I love the drum beat that shows it's face later in the song. Rating: 5/5
Track 13: Not the Red Baron Now this is what I like to think of as a Pretty Filler. It's just a filler, but it's quite enjoyable. Rating: 3.7/5
Track 14: Agent Orange Not much to say here, but it's a very pretty piano piece of 1:25. It's about Amos' security guard..Rating4/5
Track 15: Donut Song This song made me laugh at the title. When I heard it, I was very surprised. It was originally supposed to be a bee side. I really like it, although I don't play it that often Rating: 4/5
Track 16: In the Springtime of His Voodoo I love it! Sometimes I wonder what she was on while she was singing it, but it's definately good nonetheless. It's got a very down-homey feeling."In the springtime of his voodoo, he was going to show me spring..."Rating:5/5
Track 17: Putting the Damage On Awwww...such a sweet song! It really helps me to cope with a loss of any sort. A pretty horn section and Tori on her Bose really make this song amazing. Rating:5/5
Track 18: Twinkle A quiet song to end an awesome album. I think this is probably her best ending to an album. Rating:4/5
