Pleasant Dreams

Written: Jan 25 '01 (Updated Jan 25 '01)
Pros:dream like music perfect for relaxing and day-dreaming.
Cons:hard to understand lyrics.
The Bottom Line: Some music is perfect for exercise, some music is perfect for road trips. Milk & Kisses is perfect for bedtime, a great way to fall asleep and start dreaming.

It's unfortunate that the album "Milk & Kisses" by the Cocteau Twins ended up being their final new release. Elizabeth Fraser the lead singer for the Cocteau Twins sings with a voice so soft and dream-like it can only be appreciated if you relax and just take it in. This is definitely one album where you will find it next to impossible to sing along to the lyrics.

This album continues the Cocteau Twin's use of having instruments with their echo turned up and lyrics that operate more on a phonetic level. No one knows officially what Elizabeth Fraser is saying but that hasn't stopped her loyal fans from trying to figure it out. In some cases Mrs. Fraser has even said she doesn't remember what she was saying, since she never bothered to write down her own lyrics.

One such confusing song comes early on the album. Even if most songs are impossible to decipher, at least you can pick out a few words here and there. However one song proved to be a challenge and it wasn't until later that I learned that the lyrics are actually being sung backwards. Only the Cocteau Twins could make music sung backwards worth listening to. In fact, I wish the band was still around so they could release a whole album of songs sung backwards. I'd buy it!

The power of his album comes from listening to the album numerous times. I've come to the conclusion that what I hear each time is directly dependent on what emotional state I'm in at that time.

Since the music is very dreamy, you'll find it hard to listen to while in the car, out jogging around, or at work. The only way to truly listen to this type of music is in the privacy of your own room, covered up in your blankets. I'm sad to see them go, so Good Night Cocteau Twins and Pleasant Dreams.
