Pros: Very heavy as gothic flavored metal goes; unique Portugese folk thrown in
Cons: Dear god, those rolling R's are SO cheezy!
The Bottom Line: I recommend this album to anyone into metal and anything gothic in nature... this will quench the hunger for both while providing a pretty unique listening experience.
supraliminal's Full Review: Wolfheart/Moonspell Live by Moonspell
I purchased this album the month it was released back in the day. At the time, I was not into the metal underground much at all... I loved heavy music, I just didn't know where to find the good stuff! Anyway, I was a huge fan of Type O, and I see this album by some band named Moonspell that is being described as "Gothic metal with romantic and folk overtures" in those short two sentence long descriptions they have in some magazines, so I got it thinking I would be listening to something close to Type O. I am proud to say ever since that day I have fiercely dug my way ever deeper into the underground, but my point is anyone looking for the next Type O album be prepared to have your ear removed from your skull (but you'll enjoy it). Everyone into extreme metal, you already know what you're getting yourself into.
This album/particular Moonspell incarnation is my favorite, there really is not too many albums that are this heavy while also actually having a gothic type flavor to it (and no, I don't consider any old keyboard break in most black metal songs to be gothic... it's just a keyboard break).
The musicianship on this album is superb, though a bit raw (but not nearly as raw as some black metal bands that think it's cool for some reason to be lo-fi). The vocals are either brutal yells or a very deep chanting/singing courtesy of Langsuyar. He has a very deep voice (think a Portugese accented Peter Steele)and on this album he strikes me as not really knowing how to sing yet.... maybe his voice is just so deep it's hard to tell, but he kind of sounds more like he's just speaking as opposed to singing when he does his clean vocals. I have always believed Langsuyar, whether you love or hate Moonspell, has the coolest scream I've ever heard. The lyrics tend to deal with
wolves, mother nature, and erotic musings. As I said, the album is gothic tinged, but too raw to exactly be steeped in atmosphere.... there's no way I would call this album atmospheric. There are also some songs with portugeselyrics as well as some actual Portugese folk songs gone metal, adding to the originality.
Those who have listened to other Moonspell albums and thought they would be good if only they were heavier, give this a spin. Fans of gothic flavored metal like Cradle of Filth should also give this a listen. If you like this album, I suggest checking out Tristania or (especially) Mental Home's Black Art.
