scapp70's Full Review: Real Love [Single] by The Beatles
This song released in early 1996 was part of the Beatles Anthology series, and it was included on the second double CD, Anthology 2.
Many Beatles fans will compare this song to Free As A Bird from Anthology 1 and that's expected. These are the two new Beatles songs in 25 years (unless you count Ringo's solo album Ringo which had all of the Beatles on one album).
I love Free As A Bird, and I especially love the video. The video encapsulates the Beatle magic. I do not know what it does for non-Beatle fans, but for the fans it is just plain old magic. John's voice sounds a bit more murky and muffled on Free As A Bird than his vocals do on Real Love.
Free As A Bird also has all four Beatles credited in the writing of the song. Real Love is just credited to John. Paul McCartney stated that he liked the recording and writing process for Free As A Bird more because it was more of a team effort, and he enjoyed the writing aspect of it, opposed to just being a backing band for a John Lennon composition.
I personally think that Real Love is definitely a better song than FAAB lyrically and musically. I think that the lyrics stand out as some of John's best.
Lennon is always praised for his lyrics, but most of the love songs, while they are great, are too personal and they are closed off from the listener. For example, The Ballad Of John & Yoko, Oh Yoko, My Mummy's Dead, Mother, Dear Yoko, Julia..etc.
But then there are some amazing love song lyrics like In My Life, Oh My Love, Woman, I Want You, Beautiful Boy...and now Real Love.
Lyrics like No need to be alone, no need to be alone, it's real love, it's real are very honest and universally adaptive for the listener's own personal experiences.
Real Love is one of my all time favorite Beatle songs. The harmonies are perfectly Beatle-like, the guitar solo is perfectly Beatle-like, everything is here and everything you expect and need from The Beatles is contained in this track. It sounds to me like this song could have fit in nicely with Abbey Road. It's very much in that style.
The other songs start off with Baby's In Black. This is a live version of the song that is not available on the Anthology 2 album. It sounds record perfect, except it sounds as if Paul is trying to compete with the high volume of the audience screams.
Then there is a new mix for Yellow Submarine which is exactly the same recording that we know and love, but in this new mix, the sound effects and background noises are brought more to the front. Maybe to show how creative and funny The Beatles were. I don't know why, but to me it is interesting. I'm not sure what a non-Beatle fanatic would think.
There is also a new mix of Here, There & Everywhere. I wish that they would remix all Beatles albums, because this song sounds great.
Well, I'm sorry I went on too long for a four song CD single, but there was a lot I wanted to say. The bottom line is that this is a very important & significant Beatles related release. I would hope everyone would also get the chance to listen to this song in 5.1 DTS in the Beatles Anthology DVD box set.
