Pros:Smart lyrics, great melodies, good musicianship, and Billie Joe Armstrong.
Cons:Just that this band does not tour!
The Bottom Line: With the incredible lyrics of Aaron Cometbus and music written by Billie Joe Armstrong, one cannot go wrong.
I am the first to review this EP by Pinhead Gunpowder. I am suprised because I believe that this and "Shoot the Moon" (both CDEP's) are their best works by far. Whenever Pinhead Gunpowder puts out less songs at a time, the songs sounds more different and the melodies stand out more from each other. On "Carry the Banner", Pinhead Gunpowder truly shines.
Highlights:
1. Find My Place - This is a song that is really energizing that starts preaching Aaron Cometbus' lyrics right away. It is a great song about wanting to be someone in the world. "I feel like someone's taking my place in this world, I feel out of place every place, Too much time on my hands, And no one understands my demands, For Changing this world." - beautiful!
5. Walkin' Catastrophe - A great upbeat, bouncy punk song in the same vein as Green Day's Walking Contradiction (not just because of the similarities in song titles.) Great hooks in this song.
9. Mahogany - This is a cover of the great song by Diana Ross. They really do a great job of not butchering a song and still changing the genre completely. Billie's (yes, of Green Day) shows his great vocal talent in this song.
In conclusion, you should not pass this up. And for 9 songs under 20 minutes (EP = cheap price), it is worth every cent. Pinhead Gunpowder includes Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Jason White (Influents), Bill S. (Monsula, a bunch of other East Bay punk bands), and Aaron Cometbus (Crimpshrine, writer of Cometbus 'zine, that is why the lyrics are so incredible, they are written by him!). Do not look for this band to tour, because they do not, they are merely a side band who play for fun.
