Reminisce with 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15
Written: May 22 '01 (Updated May 22 '01)
Pros:Great collection of light rock and ballad 70s music
Cons:Inferior quality of CD / Cassette production
The Bottom Line: If you're part of the 70s generations 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 will bring back a lot of memories of days gone by.
To be very honest, I was surprised when I discovered that Epinions had this collection of rock and roll hits in their system! I’ve had this collection for so long that I really didn’t believe that it would even be sold anymore much less be here for me to review. But I see I am wrong so here we go!
70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 is a collection of hits from the 70s that will bring a smile to many of us of that generation. I remember with great fondness listening to many of these selections when I was in high school and college in my youth. (Am I THAT old?) ;)
The original artists perform all of the selections. This is really a treat because usually with some of the lower priced CDs such as this one labeled as “various artists” performing the selections, you’ll get unknown individuals trying to imitate the original production. However, this is not the case in this situation and because of that 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 is a very special collection indeed.
In my personal opinion, there are no bad tracks on this CD. Most of the selections are light rock or are ballad type selections.
Some of my favorites include:
Your Smiling Face by James Taylor – This probably is one of my most favorite songs. I sing it really almost all of the time but naturally especially when I am in love with someone! It’s just a natural song that expresses exactly what I feel in my heart when I see the smiling face of someone I really love and care about – that being that I just have to smile back!
Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce – Jim Croce’s career ended quite tradegicly when he was quite young and if you realize that while you listen to this song and its moving lyrics you will have a different perspective on life than you did before. Very moving and tender ballad with incredible guitar instrumentals.
City of New Orleans by Steve Goodman – Since I am originally from South Louisiana, I have a certain fondness of any song that mentions my own home state! So naturally, I love this really smooth and tender ballad because of that.
Get Closer By Seals & Crofts – Really soft and moving light rock song that gives a message that if you have to take risks to get closer to other people, especially in relationships.
However, there is one track that I really do not enjoy very much at all and that is Short People by Randy Newman. I really feel that it is very insulting to men especially of short stature and I have met many men of my generation who are short and have been affected negatively by the impact of this song believe it or not. Therefore, if ther is a selection that I would say is NOT recommended, it would be Short People.
However, other than that song, 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 is a really smooth and relaxing collection of 70s songs that is absolutely ideal for many occasions including class reunions, relaxing while reading or working, or even driving in the car. It’s non-intrusive instrumentals are classic to the 70s era and the harmony of most of these songs is absolutely flawless.
If there is an overall negative aspect to 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 in its entirity it would be that two things. First is the fact that this is a non-digital recording and it shows it. Second is the fact that the vendor is not one a high quality one so the CD (or cassette) will not last what you may consider a significant lifetime.
However, for the contents of this great collection, you can go wrong and for that reason, I highly recommend the purchase of 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 for your audio collection.
Overall selections contained in 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 include the following:
Your Smiling Face - James Taylor
On & On - Steven Bishop
You're Only Lonely - J.D. Souther
City Of New Orleans - Steve Goodman
Short People - Randy Newman
Time In A Bottle - Jim Croce
Alice's Rock & Roll Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie
Vincent - Don McLean
Get Closer - Seals & Crofts
Note: If you click on the half off link on this review, you will go to half.com where you can find a copy of 70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 15 for a really great price of $2.48 the last time I looked. Personally because of the quality of the CD, I believe this is probably the best price that I would pay for it.
