AphexSliter's Full Review: Seasick by Imperial Teen
"Seasick" is the first album from the side project of Roddy Bottum (Faith No More), but sounds nothing like his previous work. It blends simple lyrics, simple melodies, raw energy and musicality to create an addicting and beautiful album. I sing along to every track. I love it.
It starts out with the mellow track "Imperial Teen" which sets the precedent for the album with a great acoustic riff, and wonderfully elusive lyrics like "So sick then/Take medicine/I'm up to/My neck in/Party favors/Pesticides and pills". Bottum's calm voice is very effective in evoking a sense of serenity, which is instantly broken by the abrasive voice of Will Schwartz in the raucous "Water Boy", the perfect foil to the first track. I tell you, it's just great.
The album continues on the trend of low key melodies mixed in with the occasional faster piece. One slightly off moment comes during the single "You're One." Don't get me wrong, this song totally rocks, and it's the whole reason I got the disc in the first place, but it sounds slightly discontinuous with the rest of the album. Also, some of the last tracks are slightly lacking in the genius of the previous tracks. All in all, a great album.
