scapp70's Full Review: Heaven For Everyone [Single] by Queen
This review is for the CD SINGLE thank you
Hollywood Records made some attempt for Queen promotional aspect, by cutting some singles and sending them to radio stations and also for retail. It did nothing to help the failure of this single, even though it's not that bad a song.
Heaven For Everyone was originally a song from Roger Taylor's other band that released some albums in the late 1980's. It shows up as a Queen song officially in 1995 on the posthumous release Made In Heaven. Written by drummer, Roger Taylor, this song surely sounds like a Queen song from around the same era. It has such similarities to a Queen song called The Miracle from an album from the same name released in 1989. Both songs sing about a utopia situation that's coming, or that we could have rather if we people pull together.
This world could be fed, this world could be fun
This could be heaven for everyone
This world could be free, this world could be one
I suppose that Roger may have sensed the similarities to The Miracle musically and lyrically, that he decided to release this almost B song with a totally different band which Roger himself fronted, called The Cross.
Queen's version is far superior than the one released by The Cross. Freddie's vocals give it more accessibility and commercial sound. This song is an easy listening style song, a slow paced, go nowhere, type of tune. It kind of falls into the adult contemporary genre. Yet, having said that, Freddie's vocals give it more of a harder edge.
What's cool about this CD Single is the rare track that was included here for the first time since it's original placement. Soul Brother was originally the flipside of Queen's single from 1981, Under Pressure. The song is not that great, it sounds more like a jam in the studio type of song that was recorded off the cuff. The lyrics could easily have been made up on the spot. Freddie seems to be singing an ode to his guitarist, Brian May, and he uses a lot of Brian-penned song titles in these lyrics. He includes, Keep Yourself Alive, We Will Rock You and Flash Gordon.
The song uses just the basic guitar/bass/drums with Freddie at the vocals. It's sort of heavy, yet laid back. The song seems to be live in the studio, except for the backing vocals in some spots.
By the way, this single did not chart in the US top 100 singles charts.
It's nice to see that this CD Single is still accessible, online at least, for purchase. I doubt it will be for long, I'd snatch mine up today.
