Marilyn Manson's highly-acclaimed and most talked about record

Written: Jun 22 '06 (Updated Jun 29 '06)
Pros:Marilyn Manson created a nightmare in Hell with this haunted house CD.
Cons:It's a nightmare from Marilyn Manson that is out to destroy you.
The Bottom Line: This isn't for everyone.

If you aren't hearing this there is nothing I can do. I'm only trying to save you, but I cannot come to save you, but this is what you deserve. This is something your Lord got upon the cross. You are not a victim and you are not an offender. These are the dying years. When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you. -Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson has always stood out in the crowd. You could put him in a room with angels and he will stand out. You could put him in a room with devils and he still will stand out. I think he is both an angel and a devil. So why does he stand out so much? Truth is, he is one of a kind. He was brought into this world to shock people(so he believes) and bring a whole new meaning to heavy metal or just plain hard rock. With this creepy appearance, his maniac like vocals when he screams on songs, and his ever talked about stays in "The Church Of Satan." He seems to always shock us. I was turned into a fan of his work only recently by his catchy, heavy and loud music on the masterpiece The Golden Age of Grotesque [PA]

AntiChrist Superstar was and still is Marilyn Manson's acclaimed record out of all his work he has ever done. It stood out because during the making of this record and it's release, Marilyn Manson was high on the creepy meter. From becoming a member of "The Church Of Satan" to his on-stage performances. So put on your Manson shoes and let's walk in Marilyn Manson's "Haunted House." Trust me, it's one hell of a ride!

Although, it does have a live audience, this isn't a live track. Irresponsible Hate Anthem is the album's opener. I, too think this isn't a great way to start this record. The pummeling drums, the screechy guitars and the excessive screams from Manson is what you should expect and it comes full throttle here. Although, it's somewhat a decent listen, it's almost a waste of space. The ever popular The Beautiful People is second with it's rhythmic bass line which is heavy and addictive(this would later be used in the 2000's "Disposable Teens"). Also, the eerie guitars pack their punch as well. Satanic screams, ghastly whispers and echoes bound from Manson here. Now, this should have been the opener for this record. "Hey you, what do you see?! Something beautiful and something free?!" Dried up, Tied and Dead to the world brings a horror movie with it. Authentic eerie guitar licks, bass line being ever so deep and grind. Muffled, deep groaning, and a few screams from Manson makes this an intense and deep song to follow. It'll take you on a Hell-bent ride.

Though Tourniquet is a popular song, I can understand why the song is hated by some. It's groggy and depressing by the slow-paced drum line and the guitars screech on the soft side. Also, Manson's vocals, which are screechy, groggy and too high pitched, are also hated by some. However, I actually like this song because of it's creativity. "I'll be your lover, I'll be forever." Edgy and intense is what comes from Little Horn. It's one of those short songs that are too brief to enjoy. The drum line just pounds away while the hard core guitars licks away. Manson shines on this track; hard core yelling, deep moans and a cocky tone in his voice throughout. Even though Cryptorchild has a techno-like sound on the guitars with no bass at all. The main problem with this song(many people will agree with me here) is that Manson is way too high pitched and he sounds so much like a crying woman. This is the worst song on this record, no doubt.

Deformography is a unique song. The bass line is deep and dull, then it goes into a loud and sharp mode. The guitars are screechy and make a (da-da-da-da) sound. I really like Manson's vocals here; eerie whispers and then he gets angry on the chorus while screaming and blurting it all out. "You're such a dirty rock star!" Wormboy is another unique piece. The production is strangely similar to Korn's Twister Transistor; the drum line is pummels in a rhythmic fashion which makes the song a guilty pleasure. Manson's vocals are a mix with deep screams and the high pitched vocals. It could have had better direction, but it's still good. Manson takes us on the opposite side of him being the superstar to being the fan in Mister Superstar. Pummeling drums and the screechy guitars draw blood in this track; it gets louder as the song progresses. Manson is everywhere on this track. He is literally doing anything with his voice on his track. From screaming to plain just singing in a muffled tone.

"The things he has you'll never want to see..sketch a little keyhole for looking." Don't it just make you wonder what Angel With the Scabbed Wings has in store for you. From the grinding bass line that sounds authentic and the guitars lick so right, you wonder how in the hell did it come together! Loud screams and whispers is what in store for you from Manson. It's an early Halloween treat, let's call it that! Kinderfeld is a pure drag of Hell and that's bad! The production is so pointless and so slow that I don't need to explain and Manson's vocals are identical as in "Cryptorchild." The moment you all have been waiting for, AntiChrist Superstar is up for reviewing. From the start, the anthem-like production(thumping bass and unique guitar fashion) plays and you'll easily be immersed into a guilty pleasure of Manson's gritty moans and the screechy screams. It's the kind of song that should be in a very scary horror flick. It's haunting and eerie in every sense of those two words. 1996 is a pure ANTI-anthem. Everything is ANTI-. The production is fast paced with the pummeling drums and the guitars are driving through. Endless screams from Manson will endure through this song. It's actually not bad as it sounds. "Anti song, anti me, I don't deserve a chance to be."

Minute of Decay is one of the three final songs where Marilyn Manson's emotional status appears. The production is rock, but it has a ballad tone to it. The guitars are loud, but mild on the extreme hits and the drums are kept low. Manson's vocals do tend to get high pitched with the screams, but mostly he sounds like he is emotionally depressed because his vocals are groggy. Although, the song is not one of my favorites, it's a decent track. The Reflecting God is a tad heavier than previous with a deep bass line and the guitars are, let's say not low. Manson's vocals are once again depressing with groggy tones; he does scream a few out now and then. Man That Your Fear is about a story about his elders being the reason why he is and this is Manson's shiniest moment. With just a mild bass line and a few piano tunes, it's all up to Manson to make the track worthy with his sorrowful and utterly depressing to hear vocals. "I was born into this, everything turns to sh*t."

At the end of it all, I was put through a haunted house ride and the tour guide was Marilyn Manson. Although, this isn't his best work, I can definitely see why it's critically acclaimed because yes, this is a powerful record. Not by the sounds, but by the lyrics. This record is every letter of the word Haunted. It's a very emotional and utterly depressing record and that is why people love it so much.

Great Music To Play While: scaring the crap out of people in your hand-built haunted house!
