Pros: Beautiful songs, interesting version of previous songs, nice cover of a classic
Cons: Freaky and scary new version of Professional Widow.
The Bottom Line: Wonderful addition to a Tori Amos collection and for people just starting to listen to her, this is a well rounded single to try her interesting sound out.
Monnie1976's Full Review: Hey Jupiter EP [EP] by Tori Amos
Today I decided to expand my Tori Amos collection just a little more and picked up the Hey Jupiter EP to hear some songs I haven't had the priviledge to hear yet. The one thing I love about Tori Amos's singles is that they always include new version of old songs, songs never heard or interesting covers. This EP is no exception and has all of the above.
"Hey Jupiter" is a pleasant surprise because it is a different version than the one on the Boys For Pele album. More techno in sound this was kind of a foreshadowing of the direction Amos would take with her next album. There is a low, haunting string sound with some interesting sound effects underneath her voice. This gives the song a whole different feel.
The lyrics to this song is about changing the way you see the world and the fact that you can never go back. In an interview Amos refers to this song as a turning point in the album where she realizes she will never look at things the same way and there is a sense of loss. The words really strike a chord and I can remember a time I could relate to them so well.
"Sometimes I breathe you in and I know you know
And sometimes you take a swim find your writing on the wall
If my hearts soaking wet boy your boots can leave a mess"
The next song is a live version called "Sugar". At the beginning Tori is talking to the audience and this gives us a nice look into her personality and the woman behind the music. She talks about being with a man for nine months and how that should be long enough for him to know how many sugars you want in your tea. The song has a nice piano sound and her voice is low and intersting.
Then she moves into a live version of a song called "Honey". Tori informs us this song should have been on Under The Pink except that she was being a "dingaling". I love this song and it has an eclectic sound and some fascinating lyrics.
The one song on here I just haven't been able to warm up is the strange, gothic version of "Professional Widow". Featuring her voice, which wails and shrieks, and a heavy, dark organ. From the way she talks in the beginning I feel like it is a spontaneous version that the audience has requested. That is very impressive if thats the case. I think it is interesting but if I fell asleep while listening to it I have a feeling I would have a very scary dream.
She ends this little EP with a amazing cover of the classic "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I love the original version and to have Tori put her own personal spin on it is just unbelievable. It is slow and sounds like a gorgeous lullaby. This is something I could have sweet dreams too. It is soothing and soft.
I am very pleased with my purchase and only one song didn't satisfy my expectations. This doesn't bother me because most CD singles don't include all the extras anyway. Recieving four extra songs for just $7.99 is a nice experience. I highly recommend investing in this extra Tori Amos experience and see some more of her raw talent and interesting recordings.
