cletta1201's Full Review: Hey Jupiter [EP] by Tori Amos
After the debacle that was ”Strange Little Girls”, I had to step away from the music of Tori Amos and take a break – I was completely disappointed and sad for this artist who I loved and who I felt had made a serious mistake with SLG. Now, with the impending release of a new studio album (Scarlet’s Walk Oct. 29th), I have a new renewed drive to break out all my Tori music and play it until I fall out.
Tori Amos really does have a wealth of music to be found all around. There are remixes, remixes of remixes – songs you can only get in Australia, things of that sort and it’s always so nice and exciting to run into something new from her. The ”Hey Jupiter 5-Song Ep” falls into that special class of great songs that not everyone gets to hear from the cornflake girl, but needs to experience.
- Track Listing -
1. Hey Jupiter [The Dakota Version]
2. Sugar [Live]
3. Honey [Live]
4. Professional Widow [Merry Widow Version – Live]
5. Somewhere Over The Rainbow [Live]
”Hey Jupiter” in its original version happens to be one of my very favorite Tori songs, and the Dakota Version is equally mesmerizing as the original. Slowed down a bit with a really seductive drum loop in the background – it’s delectable. From the breaks to the ooo’s that remind me of Prince, it feels complete. As most people know Amos has a really interesting voice, but what makes her unique is that she always knows what she’s doing – every little nuance is done for a reason and you either love it or hate it.
Four of the EP’s tracks are recorded live and feature a little personal intro from Tori which is delightful because one of the beauties of her songs is that even though they all have a specific subject – you could really make the song be about what you want it to be about. I’m no philosopher and I admittedly don’t “get” all of her songs – so it’s funny to hear what they’re actually about. ”Sugar” is utterly simple – about a boy who forgets how many sugars she takes in her tea. The song is so simple but glorified into this amazing song where you can hear every breath into the microphone and that awe-inspiring piano.
”Honey”, which was originally supposed to be featured on the ”Under The Pink” album is a treat. Tori says this is one of her favorites and listening to it you can completely imagine it being included on UTP. About taking a woman for granted* - the best part of this song is that she chose to share it. ”Professional Widow” has never been a song that I’d list as one of my favorites although it has some of the most memorable Tori lyrics: ” slag pit/ stag sh it/ honey bring it close to my lips – yes/ don't blow those brains yet/ we gotta be big boy/ we gotta be big/ starf ucker just like my Daddy/ just like my Daddy/ selling his baby/ just like my Daddy /gonna strike a deal make him feel like a congressman” It gets a serious uplift with the “Merry Widow Remix” – although the song is hauntingly dark.
Perhaps the best treat on the EP is ”Somewhere Over The Rainbow” which I’m sure has never been interpreted in quite the same way. The Wizard Of Oz would never have been the same with this melancholy yet hopeful song.
- Final Thoughts -
If you like Tori Amos this is a great item to have, if you love her – you need it. Since the versions of these songs (performed live) aren’t very common – it’s nice to have them all in one place and sounding so good.
