evieandjoe's Full Review: First Band on the Moon by The Cardigans
Their debut album, "Emmerdale", and their follow up, "Life", have been hits in the pop nouveau circles for quite a while, but this album catapulted them outside those boundaries thanks to the single "Lovefool". Like many, I loved the song when I first heard it but I became tired of it also (can anyone say "Walking On the Sun" by Smashmouth?). The entire album is a very fulfilling experience after an entire listen. Most notably, the opening track, "You're New Cuckoo", which rivals "Carnival" from Life, as the sweetest melody from the group. "Life" ranges from sugar-sweet to super saturated, and the sugar-sweet songs leave you wanting more super saturated songs. This album adds energy to the sugar-sweet songs to combine adrenaline with your sugar rush. After this disk becomes a regular in your cd player, you will begin to think "Lovefool" is a bit out of place here. To compare this album with Emmerdale, Emmerdale's energy came in the form of Jangley pop, whereas "First Band" doesn't shy away from distortion, rather, it uses it in the most reserved way as to not comprimise the groups sound in the least bit. I would make it a point to own the first three albums by this group...and check out the band Tahiti 80 for something similar from some of the same studio personel.
