Think she's overrated? That's fine. But you just gave her more exposure. And if you're really a Crow fan, you know that most of her best material wasn't released as a single.

One more thing...in my review I did note that there are some EXCELLENT songs on this album. I say specifically that I don't really enjoy the singles (I hesitated to even mention them in the review since they are so misrepresentative of the album), and that a handful of song are really very good.

Just wanted to reinterate that fact real quick-like.

Shelly.

Hi Martha,

I appreciate your opinion but I ask please for a re-read of my opinion. I do not vehemently dislike Sheryl Crow by any stretch of the imagination. I somewhat dislike this album and dislike some of her other albums/songs.

Regarding the charity, etc... of Sheryl Crow. It has no impact on the music unfortunately. Pretend for a moment that we didn't have a press that reported on such things and that we didn't know one way or another. Or pretend that I was just hearing Sheryl Crow for the first time. I wouldn't care and this album wouldn't make me want to seek out such trivia.

Regarding the message of the songs. Honestly, again, I am not moved by any of it. I've heard all those messages before and for years from other artists. It takes something REALLY special to catch my attention.

Again, thanks for stopping by.

up front that you have majorly dissed one of my favorite people, so I'll try and remain objective in my comment! :)

I only rated this Somewhat Helpful, because I didn't feel it was a review so much as a diatribe against an artist, and a venomous one at that. And I don't feel I know much about the album except that you hate Sheryl Crow most of the time.

In the beginning you state that Sheryl has had her "fair share of failure". Can you elaborate on that? Because the last I checked, every album has sold incredibly well.

You then go on to say that you "genuinely despised Crow for her missteps." Why is that? Do you despise other artists for their missteps, or do you just chalk it up to their learning curve, or a desire to experiment?

So she recorded "Sweet Child O' Mine" for the Big Daddy soundtrack. If you didn't like it, you could have changed stations. Why rip her to shreds for recording a song she wanted to?

"One of the most plastic of all the famous faces" to emerge from that era? Why does everyone that meets Sheryl Crow love Sheryl Crow? Why does everyone want to work with her? Why did she go to Bosnia before anyone knew where Bosnia was? Why does she perform at nearly every charity event she's asked to perform at? Why does she give so much of her time and energy to so many causes? Why did she fly to New York on Sept. 12th and put on a special show for people who were hurting and lost and needed something to believe in?

You can dislike her music, Shelly, but why attack her so viciously as a person? And why write a review of someone you dislike so much?

You say you're angry because her songs were played on the radio every hour. Is that her fault? People like her, they want to hear her. It happens with every popular song, or popular artist. Why single her out?

Musically, you called "Redemption Day" a distinctively country song. I guess you don't listen to much country, or much pop, because this song is decidedly not country. But I digress. Why not discuss the meaning of the song, which is about war, and who benefits, and who doesn't? The song means something, and you really had nothing to say about that part of it.

In fact, every song on here has something to say about a lot of things. You seem to have missed that. What sorts of things? The hypocrisy of society, sexism, war, poverty, abortion rights, violence in schools, the bullsh*t of fame, the betrayal of friends, and flirtations with insanity, just to name a few. But you didn't talk about that.

You say Sheryl "sold out" on this record. I guess you don't know the story behind "Tuesday Night Music Club," and how after she won the Grammy, all the "boys in the band" started saying she was a studio creation, and that they were responsible for her success, etc.

Look at the cover of TNMC, and the cover of this one. Do you think she's happy? No. She's making a statement. Two members of the TNMC were dead, one of alcohol poisoning, and one by autoerotic asphyxiation, and one member (horribly strung out on drugs) blamed Sheryl.

She went through many months of depression -- depression so severe she could not get out of bed. This album was her statement when she came out of that. Look how many instruments she plays. Look who produced it. SHERYL CROW. Written, played, sung, and produced by SHERYL CROW. Not many women can boast that, and neither can many men. So give her some points for ballsiness if nothing else. Oh, and musical expertise, whether you like that music or not.

Sheryl Crow is an amazingly generous artist who has been completely candid about her struggles as a person, an artist, a woman, and she's also one of the most self-deprecating, hysterically funny interviews I've ever seen. (See her debut on Lettermen?)

Okay, so I didn't really keep my anger in check here, did I? :) Sorry. But you should review an album, not an artist -- especially if said artist is someone you despise, someone who leaves you with a sour stomach.

Think she's overrated? That's fine. But you just gave her more exposure. And if you're really a Crow fan, you know that most of her best material wasn't released as a single.

My list of her best?

Run, Baby, Run
Leaving Las Vegas
No One Said It Would Be Easy
I Shall Believe
Change (yes, it was a single)
Redemption Day
Love Is A Good Thing
Hard To Make A Stand
Ordinary Morning
Sad Sad World
Riverwide
The Difficult Kind
Crash And Burn
Weather Channel

I didn't like the CD "Soak Up The Sun". I think it was a major "misstep". Do I despise her for that? No. She's a human being. She makes mistakes. And she's admitted she's tired. And this record shows that. A plastic person would have lied and said it was the best thing they'd ever done. Sheryl came out and said she was having a nervous breakdown trying to get it made, and nothing was happening. Chrissie Hynde told her to stop working and live her life. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. But she's living her life now.

So, who would you rather young kids look up to, Sheryl Crow or Mariah/Britney/JLo/Jessica -- the real plastic people of the world? Just curious.

Anyway, your review didn't make me happy, but disagreeing is part of the game. I'm just standing up for someone I don't think deserves what you just wrote about her.

Respectfully,
Marsha

Ms. Sarah usually moves me more than Sheryl Crow. Usually, I say, because sometimes I get sick of the Canadian songstress' repetition and formula. It's a good formula, but for me she sometimes also grows tired.

Thanks, V., for your comment.

Sweet Child isn't on this album (fortunately). I'm mostly pleased to say I don't own it outside of the original version :)

Me too. 'Sweet Child of Mine' is probably the worst song on this album but other than that I really like it.

Shelly,

I agree with your assessment of Ms. Crows musical talents or lack thereof as the case may be. Her songs are either hit or miss, and mostly miss in my book. Now Sarah McLachlan (Afterglow) whom I am listening to now, never fails to move me…Excellent review of this album as always…

Like you, I also hated her cover of Sweet Child Of Mine.
I have to admit, however...I kind of like this album! This came out when I was working at a CD store. Hard to believe that was nine years ago...

Yeah, I was never too fond of the singles from this album either, except for "If It Makes You Happy" a little bit. I always think it's lame in the movie "Phenomenon" when they start playing "EDIAWR" (like I'm gonna type all that out) and they synchronize the uberselloutline "Jump in, let's go" with the kids getting in the truck, like some kind of Chevy commercial.

"My Favorite Mistake" though, still love that one.
