Yeah, he and Chris Bell of Big Star wrote the theme which appeared on the first version and then was redone by Cheap Trick. I preferred the Big Star version.

Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March!! (Reply to this comment)

As much as I love hearing the Letter and Cry Like A Baby on oldies radio, I wish they would play Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March. Great underplayed Box Tops song! Why is this? I think it's far superior to Soul Deep, which, by the way, hardly ever gets played on oldies radio. And the lyrics to the song? Way ahead of its time. I do remember hearing this a lot on KFRC San Francisco in 1968. Call your oldies stations and request this one!!

Another Chilton, of all things! (Reply to this comment)

Well, you sure taught me something! I've always rather enjoyed the Box Tops, but have never done much research on the group or the music. "Airplane" was a favorite of mine in it's time. Now I find the lead singer shares my last name, which is not a common one! Guess I need to see if there are some websites out there!

Thanks for the informative and well-written review.

Didn't he also write the theme to "That 70's Show"?

The Box Tops are one of my favorite groups from the sixties. For their niche, there was none better, IMO. Great work on filling in the little known details. George

I still have my well-worn 45 rpm vinyls of "The Letter" and "Cry Like A Baby"! Fabulous review!

Very true. Paul and the other ex-Replacements are huge fans of Alex.

Alex has some additional bit of fame when The Replacements did a song about him in the '80s.
