Pros:Jane's vocals, lyrics, industrial tracks, great pop-rock melodies.
Cons:A few songs that aren't instantly catchy appear on this CD unlike later releases.
The Bottom Line: Comic Book Who're is a phenomenal initial release by the Great Jane Jensen. Check out all her newer stuff available online and be instantly addicted!
A while ago I was at a New Duncan Imperials (whom I had been only just really introduced to through watching the Troma film 'Tromeo & Juliet) show and lo and behold they had their CDs for sale. One of the CDs available was the soundtrack for Tromeo & Juliet. I happily purchased a copy.
There's a bunch of good stuff on there but this isn't a review for the soundtrack, this is for Jane Jensen's Comic Book Who're (Epinions doesn't seem to like that word, even though the title is listed with it). Why did I even bring it up? Well Ms. Jensen was Juliet in the film and contributed one song to the film's soundtrack. Jane's band on the soundtrack was called Booterella and I really enjoyed it.
Flash forward a bit and I was about to purchase a hard to find copy of Comic Book Who're through eBay when I luckily found a copy in a used CD shop here in Winnipeg (odd, but heck, lucky me)!
I've given this CD a ton of listens and have enjoyed it so much that I try and force it on all my friends when I'm around. I listen to music that normally isn't that accessible to mainstream people but with Ms. Jensen playing at my parties and such, people raise an eyebrow and really seem to dig it.
What type of music can I categorize Jane Jensen's sound as? Heavily delving into an industrial sound, hard enough to please rock n' roll fans, pop enough to please the teenyboppers. It's fun electronic pop rock!
The CD has tons of great beats. Initially when I was first searching for this album I had downloaded whatever I could find online. The track 'More Than I Can' was luckily the first song I ever heard from this CD.
More Than I Can is a slow driven testimonial that advises whomever Jane is speaking to that what they want is just more than she can give. I've seen an actual video for this one online too and it's pretty good. I love the beat and Janes voice that slowly follows the music.
Luv Song is a great tune! This is one I like to play around the women. It's a funny cute little ditty about what women want from Jane's point of view. "He never gets sleepy, he goes down all night!" "Can he drown a whisky sour and knock off an Eveready Battery?" "Is he cool like James Dean?" and "Can he shake it like Elvis?"
Another of my favorite tracks from the album is Highway 90. With a similar repeating music track like More Than I Can had, only a little more upbeat.
Jane Jensen who I just started listening to a year or so ago is always in my playlists these days. I highly recommend everyone check her out. She has a newer CD out called 'Burner' that you can buy autographed from her website at www.janejensen.net, or you can even practically download the whole thing for free at http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/120/jane_jensen.html. For free! How can anyone not try that out? Since there isn't any place to review Burner on Epinions.com I'll just recommend a few tracks to download from her new CD, Fast Girl U.S.A., Burner, Candy And Razorblades, and Rock That are all favorites.
Yet another place fans should check out is Jane's even newer songs. She's in a band called The Dolls 'www.thedolls.net'. All their music is online and downloadable too. It's the first MP3.com CD I've ever bought and I love it. Every single song on their EP is great!
Happy listening everyone.
