Pros: Almost everything, great lyrically and musically, its the Foo Fighters!!
Cons: One or two songs are not great
The Bottom Line: This is a rock classic that is better than both of the Foo Fighter's other releases. It is probably the hardest and is a classic that everyone should have.
colldy's Full Review: The Colour & The Shape by Foo Fighters
Ok, so this write off is called the Re Writeoff because we are supposed to delete an old review and rewrite it. So below is my rewritten version of my old epinion. Below it is my old review of the album.
New Review
Who ever thought that the "drummer from Nirvana", as he used to be called a few years ago would turn out to be the frontman of an incredibly succesful band today. Dave Grohl, one of my favorite artists of all time, after the tragic death of one of rock's greats Kurt Cobain, had to leave Nirvana. In 95 Grohl released the Foo Fighter's self titled debut album, and it was great. It didn't get much fame, although the single Big Me had a classic music video to go along with it. It seemed the Foo Fighters were still under the shadow of the grunge gods Nirvana. 2 years later, the Foo Fighters, made up of Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, and William Goldsmith released their sophomore album, The Colour and the Shape. I think it is a classic rock album, better than their other two albums, beating them both out in all categories.
Lyrically, this album is very strong. Dave Grohl as talent, there's no denying it. Read the lyrics of Everlong and you will be amazed. I think maybe it was a good thing Nirvana broke up because I think the Foo Fighters are even better. Musically, this album is also very strong. This album was clearly influenced by Nirvana, but the Foo Fighters have something about them that is original, and very likeable too.
Doll
Huh, if you only heard this song without the rest of the album you would be mislead to say the least. Doll is a short 1 minute track that is a perfect way to start the album in the context it's in. It is slow and soft and builds perfectly for the next song, Monkey Wrench.
Monkey Wrench
Here we go!! The band starts rockin' with Monkey Wrench, by far one of the best Foo songs to date. This song is very very very catchy, fast, and extremely addictive. I almost "killed" this song by listening to it too much. Monkey Wrench is a classic and I think every rock fan has to hear it.
What have we done with innocence?
It disappeared with time, it never made much sense
Adolescent resident
Wasting another night on planning my revenge
One in ten, one in ten, one in ten
Don't wanna be your monkey wrench
One more indecent accident
I'd rather leave than suffer this
I'll never be your monkey wrench
Hey Johnny Park
The riffs in this song are some of the best I've heard. The opening riff is amazing and really fits this song. The lyrics are beautiful, especially the first verse. Then when we hit the chorus, the band starts to rock. Hey Johnny Park is definitely one of those "gems of the album."
Come and I'll take you under
This beautiful bruises colors
Everything fades in time, it's true
Wish that I had another
Stab at the undercover
Was it a change in mind, for you?
My Poor Brain
This is one of the hardest rockers on the album, though from the beginning you cannot tell at all. It starts off with 15 seconds a cacophany of random sounds, then it has Dave singing as quietly as possible, and finally it explodes.
Wind Up
This song is pretty standard. It gets angry at points, and is also pretty catchy. This isn't as good as some of the previous songs, but is definitely a very good song.
Up in Arms
Another "gem", this short and really sweet song starts off slow and soft and then gets going really fast, but maintains its sweetness and it beautiful in every way.
The rain is here,
And you my dear are still my friend
It's true the two of us are back as one again
I was the one who left you
Always coming back, I cannot forget you girl
Now I am up in arms again
My Hero
This is one of the most moving songs on this album. Lyrically, musically, this tribute to Kurt Cobain (theory) is one of the most touching songs on the album. When the song reaches its climax it just gets so powerful, so moving, so touching.
See You
A very diverse short, mostly acoustic song. Its a catchy tune, but not my favorite song. It doesn't seem to fit well in the midst of all the anthemic, post-grunge rock songs.
Enough Space
Yuk. If there is one song on TCATS that I would actually skip it would be Enough Space. The whole thing is one verse repeated over and over again. It is a hard song, but it is quite bland and boring if you ask me.
February Stars
This is the first ballad on the album. It is as climatic as My Hero. It starts off soft and slow and then starts going power chord crazy. This song contains some of the best lyrics on the album and is really sad if you think about it.
Everlong
Everlong is hands down the best song the Foo Fighters have ever written. It is the best in every category, lyrics, music, whatever. It can't be beaten. The chorus is flat out amazing and the lyrics in the verses are beautiful. I can't get enough of this phenomenal song.
Hello, I've waited here for you, everlong
Tonight I throw myself into,
And out of the red, out of her head she sang
Come down and waste away with me, down with me,
Slow how, you wanted it to be,
I'm over my head, out of her head she sang
And I wonder when I sing along with you,
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again,
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Walking after You
This is another ballad, a bit more boring and drawn out than Feb Stars. I really can't stand this song anymore, although I have fallen asleep to it quite a few times.
New Way Home
This is the longest song on the album. It starts off with a melodic riff that is reminiscent of Everlong. New Way Home is divided up into parts. The diversty of this song is one of the reasons why I like it. It is a song about the future for the band, and what it holds for them. Their third album answered all questions, and I think their upcoming album will be even better.
So that's it. The Colour and The Shape is definitely the best of the Foo Fighters albums and is one of the best albums of the 90's. It doesn't contain poppy hits like the ones on There is Nothing Left to Lose, and is better produced than their self titled debut. The Color and The Shape is a rock classic.
Old Review
I am a fairly new Foo Fighters fan. My first Foo Fighters cd, There is nothing left to lose, right when it came out, and I loved it. The songs were pretty soft, and I liked it. When I heard the song Everlong I was blown away. It was pretty much the same type of song in TINLTL. I quickly bought The Color and Shape. When I first listened to it I was disappointed. With songs like Doll and Walking After You, I thought, this isn't Foo. But after a few more listens, I realized that this is their best work. This is a true Foo album. It has much more variety, better lyrical content, and better sound than their other albums. It also contains Everlong and Monkey Wrench, two of the greatest Foo songs ever.
1. Doll- A very, very short song. It's slow, and takes a couple of listens before it'll grow on you.
2. Monkey Wrench- This is a totally different direction from Doll, and suprised me a lot. One of the hardest rockers the Foo have.
3. Hey Johnny Park- one of my personnal favorites. Great riffs and the chorus is pretty cool. Calmer than Monkey Wrench.
4. My Poor Brain- It starts out with lots of random noise to represent all the stress and confusion in Dave's head. Great song with lots of mood changes.
5. Wind Up- I just love this song, a good rocker.
6. Up in arms- a short song that starts really slow and then speeds up a lot. A favorite.
7. My Hero- a Foo classic about Kurt Cobain. A great song that is pretty sad.
8. See You- a strange acoustic song that most people like a lot. I don't think its that good, but it makes the album more diverse.
9. Enough Space- this song is probably one of the Foo's worst. Dave wrote this himself, and it doesn't look like he tried that hard.
10. February Stars- a love ballad, starts off slow and ends with some huge riffage. I like this one a lot, great lyrics.
11. Everlong- probably the Foo's biggest hit (maybe Learn to Fly was bigger) This song just rocks so much. It has the best lyrics in a song I have ever heard.
12. Walking After You- another ballad, very slow. I fall asleep to this song.
13. New Way Home- this is a very underrated song, probably because it is the last. A very diverse song
Ooh, that was harsh. Sorry for making you guys read that pathetic piece of work. :)
