Released three years after their boundry breaking release, "Betty", Helmet returned back to more of their pure metal roots for their 1997 album, "Aftertaste", some speculate, in an attempt to appease Helmet fans disappointed by "Betty". The results seem a little forced, and the bottom line is that this album is no where near as good as "Meantime". Going back to their no frills style of metal, they don't shine at all. While there are a couple good songs, including "It's so easy to get bored", "Birth Defect" and probably the best on the disc, "Driving Nowhere", this album can't come close to the power and intensity of "Meantime". Perhaps the most striking difference is in the vocals - Page Hamilton just doesn't sound as raw. He sounds much more friendly, and that makes the music as a whole less powerful as well.
Taken on its own merits, "Aftertaste" really is a decent metal album, So fans of Helmet and specifically "Meantime" (and their older releases) will probably think it's fine, and it is ok, but most people are better off with "Meantime" and "Betty".
