Portishead: An Album That Enjoys Inflicting Pain
by lambchops | Nov 01 '02
Pros: An occasional bright moment, most importantly Only You.
Cons: Shrill vocals, self-important songs, and infuriating production.

Thanks for teh suggestion. It's been on by "to buy" list for a while. However, that said, I've also been avoiding it for fear of disappointment.

Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, I definitely agree about Portishead's self-titled... Only You is fantastic, and so is Western Eyes, and Mourning Air isn't that bad either, but the rest of the album is just... unforunate. I do, however, strongly recommend that you check out Dummy... It outranks the self-titled in every way possible. Roads is absolutely one of the most perfect songs I've ever heard.

Possibly not. Only You is definitely a good song--but the rest? Well, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. My distaste for Portishead is rather, well, inexplicable. I like trip-hop and many similar acts. Just not Portishead.

Thanks much for your comment and inquiry.

Great review! I was laughing, though I disagreed...

You might still want to check out "Dummy", though - it's much more subtle and comprehensible.

Yeah. I tore Tears for Fears to bits. Now Portishead. And then there are my anti-Smiths, Cure, Lemonheads, and Catatonia reviews :)

Thanks for the comment. I promise to keep 'em coming.

once again, a wonderfully written review... shame I disagree...

I'm with you on Cerys, the girl can't sing. But Beth Gibbons has one of the most beautiful voices I for one have ever heard. And I love all three of their albums to death. I guess not everyone can like everything eh?

stop killing my fave bands! You did it to Tears for fears too!!!
keep em coming!

I know you weren't crazy about this album, but trust me, live at Roseland is fantastic! There are live arrangements remade with orchestral flourishes. The songs take on a different context and meaning in that light and it makes for a really interesting listen. Don't blow $17 on it if you didn't like Portishead, but check it out on Ebay if they have it for $8 or $9 - I think you'll like it a lot!

...this album is annoying. I was forced to listen to it many times over during my stint as a sales associate for Wherehouse Music. I think all the store managers allowed us to play was annoying music so we could give off the illusion of being a trendy, post-modern music store... it certainly didn't full the customers, whose favorite purchases tended to be the latest Celine Dion, LeeAnn Rimes, and whatever Latin album has the girl with the skimpiest bikini on the cover.

Glad someone finally agrees with me on Portishead!

Yup. It happens. Though I personally am a massive Zepp fan (that that you could possibly lump the two in remotely similar categories).

Thanks for the comments. This review just makes me feel somehow dirty...

Based on this widely accepted rumor, their albums have sold many a copy...

i think that was my favorite line (but i liked the review title a lot too!:) for some reason, it's more fun to read reviews trashing things than praising things. i feel bad for saying that, but i loved reading this - probably because i'm in your camp, this band has always annoyed me.

good review!

take care,
chad.
