supralurid's Full Review: Eighteen Over Me by Garrison Starr
I can't believe that Garrison Starr didn't make it bigger out there in the rock/alternative world. She's a good musician and a great lyricist. She's got a sound that would work on most the alternative stations out here. And for a while, they were playing some of her songs, I think. Why in the world didn't she stick?
Garrison's got more of a rock/alternative sound than a lot of what I've been listening to lately, but I can't help but just love her. The first song I heard of hers might still very well be my favorite. Superhero is the type of song that makes me feel strong and powerful. She's got a wonderful voice that works well over the electric guitar and drums.
Clearer is a more mellow, acoustic sound than most of the songs on Eighteen Over Me. Maybe that's why I like it so much. Maybe it's the lyrics like "How long will she play push-us-away? We have no idea of her secret sufferings. We have no idea of all the things she needs. It should've been clearer." Sad and beautiful.
I really love Garrison's lyrics. I think that makes all the difference for me. She's got a wonderful voice and makes great music, but what really pulls it all together are her intelligent, beautiful lyrics. Like "Should have known by the way your lips met on that cigarette, so delicate," starting out the song Eighteen Over Me. Or "What can I do for you? Don't you know who I am? I am worthy. I am Jesus' right hand man," in Passing.
Overall, this is a very solid album. Eleven great songs covering a broad range of emotions and tones. I still can't believe I'm the first one to review this. More people must be listening. She's wonderful.
