Pros: great fun
Cons: a little risque in a dumb sort of way
This song is just superb! Its just so...naff, that it becomes good again...if that makes any sense.
Aqua are a Dutch band who became a big hit in the UK with this track although their career has trailed off a little since then, at least in Britain anyway. Barbie Girl, is a camp little number with a great euro-pop beat and the type of annoyingly infectious verse-chorus-verse style that fixes itself in your head almost immediately and then refuses to go away. Even if you hate the song, you'll find yourself humming it one day, trust me.
The best/worst thing about this track is the lyrics. Delightful double-entendre permeates the track in just the right kind of way to make kids think their clever to listen to it and parents foam at the mouth to see their children corrupted in such a way. Lighten up, its harmless enough. All pop music is packed with this kind of pseudo-sexuality, and always has been. On one level its playing with a Barbie doll "you can touch my hair, caress me everywhere", and on another its something a little more risque...but its not exactly hardcore porn is it?
Camp, Catchy and Clever(despite appearances), this song was a hit across Europe and deservedly so. The rest of the band's tracks are somewhat similar sounding, so an album purchase is probably not on the cards, but check this out if you still can.
