Pros:Lot's of good rocking songs, diverse and cool
Cons:Only 10 songs, Mascara sucks
The Bottom Line: A truly essential album.

Some people hated the Deftones after Chino Moreno tore apart Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Papa Roach and Korn in the Summer Sanitarium interview last year. That is kind of a shame as the Deftones have made alot of good music over the years but oh well. Although I think White Pony might be their best album, this is a good album in it's own right. This is a essential album as well as it featurd in 100 essentail guitar albums in Guitar World. This one is considered a departure from their first album as their first album was given alot of Korn comparisons but I like Korn too. Ok, on to the review.

It begins with the song alot of people know called "My Own Summer (Shove It)". This is by far their most popular song. The guitar riff is very catchy and is not likely to leave your head any time soon. It's been used at Newgrounds.com alot too. Chino uses his trade-mark whisper technique here alot but when the chorus comes in he breaks out the screams. "SHOVE IT! SHOVE IT! SHOVE IT!"

"Ihabia" has a nice driving guitar riff. This song is even better than the previous song. It rocks out and a good song to enjoy. The drumming is nice and steady. Chino shows his singing voice very well in the chorus.

"Mascara" is a big bore so I wont mention it. The title track starts off with a drum solo and it builds up when Chino's voice and the guitar riffs come in. It's a bit slower than the previous songs mentioned. It rocks out in the chorus.

"Rickets" is the shortest song here but it rocks out very well. The guitar riffs are amazing and Chino's screams fit the song so well.

The other single "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" is very melodic and is just a cool song. Not one to miss at all!

"Lotion" brings the heavy back again and this song is just plain rocking! This is for people who want lot's of aggression. It's kinda rappish but it's not much of a bother. The guitar riffs spell out AWESOME!

"Dai The Flu" brings in some darkness. Chino's whispers fit the song so well and the music in the verses fits well too. It becomes harder in the chorus. Chino doesnt raise his voice in anger that much in this song.

"Headup" has Max of Soulfly on guest vocals and additional guitar heaviness. This song is heavy and rocks out pretty loud. It sounds cool when Max and Chino scream together.
The outro is slow and kinda makes you want more but it's still a good song nonetheless.

The closer song "MX" is the ideal closer song for this album. It's heavy and rocking. In some parts Chino trades off words with the wife of drummer Abe giving this song some uniqueness.

The only other con besides Mascara is that there are only 10 songs. It kinda makes you wish you had more but it's still a worthy buy no matter what.

This truly is a essential album to have along with White Pony. If you are a guitarist, you will need this album. Just listen to each song and you will see why. The guys at Guitar World were right for putting this on their essential guitar albums list. Get this one along with White Pony and you got yourself two good listens!
