rootwarrior's Full Review: The Fury of the Aquabats by The Aquabats
Let me first just say that in my book, the Aquabts were the breakthrough band of the year for me. I started listening to them when me and the rest of the band that I am in had to go out to shoot photos for our CD cover. We quickly went through Brian's huge CD collection to get some tunes for the road, and I noticed the Aquabats CD. I had heard of the Aquabats before, but never heard their music - so I was in for quite a surprise. When I asked Brian what kind of band they were, he replied "They're like ska, but 3rd wave, super silly and different."
Seeing as how I dont like change very much, I have to say that I wasn't too jazzed about hearing something new that I wasnt sure if I was going to like or not. So we popped in "The Fury of the Aquabats" and immediatly I was hit with the ska-horn sounding beginning of Super Rad, one of the better songs on the CD. Instantly I liked it - it was super catchy and very very likable.
As soon as the lyrics started, I could understand what Brian meant when he called them silly. The lyrics are super cool and sometimes even meaningful, which compliment the great array of horns and ska-sounding devices that are played perfectly in the background. The lyrics are consistant in the fact that they always stick to the title's story, and are always very very funny - and occasionally thought provoking. But mostly just fun.
Here are some of the other tracks on "The Fury of the Aquabats" that I like a lot, and I'm sure you will too.
Story of Nothing! - This was probably the first song on the CD that I really started to like, and this is the song that I have my friends listen to in order to get them to start listening to the Aquabats. This is probably the catchiest song on the entire CD. Immediatly you are hit with a huge horn sound playing a catchy melody (where DO the Aquabats GET all these catchy melodies?). The chorus is actually a break in the song, which sounds very different and cool. This is the song that I would pick to be the single off of this CD if I had to choose one. Listen to this song FIRST.
Fight Song! - This song is, in my opinion, musical genius. Although this song has no real lyrics (aside from sounds of men fighting each other in the background occasionally), the music is what makes this song. The Aquabats try to replicate the type of music you would hear during some sort of old Batman fight scene. You can almost envision in your mind the words "POW", "ZAK" and "KABLAMO" coming up on the screen as you listen to the Aquabats ultra-lanky fight sound music over the sounds of people fighting.
Red Sweater! - This is the Aquabats hitting up the ska-emo scene a little bit. This song is called Red Sweater, because - you guessed it - it's about a red sweater. Another reason the Aquabats are great is because you know exactly what the song is going to be about from the title. This is a love song, about how a young boy fell in love with a girl of his dreams ("you're not fat, and you don't smell bad") - who wore a read sweater with an alligator on it when he met up with her. This song has a nice break at the end where it slows down. This is a great attempt at a love song by the Aquabats because it talks about the simplicities of love - like holding hands, and chasing the ice cream truck down the street.
All in all, I love this CD - It has a wide variety of songs, all of which are well played and well thought out. A reccomendation would be to also listen to Super Rad, another catchy song - as well as to check out some stories of horror, such as The Cat With 2 Heads and The Journey of Captain Hampton. You should definately check out all the tracks on this CD, I guarantee you will find something you will like, and I guarantee a laugh.
Combine flawless skanky thin ska sound with a solid horn section and super-silly lyrics and you get "The Fury of the Aquabats", in my opinion one of the best ska-type CD's ever made.
