Once I decided to join this write off, I had to decide which CD to write about. I first thought, well, what was the CD I got. Enrique Igelasis. Ok. Scratch that idea. So I did some more thinking, looking through my CD collection and got some ideas. I thought I had decided on a CD a few times, but then I couldn't seem to think of anything to write about for them. I guess I wasn't inspired. After more thinking, I finally decided on Come On Over by Shania Twain. Yes, she is a country artist, but she does rock. At least I think so. To me, many of the songs on the CD don't even really sound like country songs. I have seen footage from some of her concerts. She puts on shows like rock stars do. Shania has influenced country music since she hit it big. I even think she has influenced some of the pop acts regarding what they wear. In most of her videos, Shania wears crop tops so her stomach is showing a bit. When she first started doing that, it was the early 90's and really no one else was doing anything like that. Now, some other female country artists wear things like that, and so do many of the young female pop artists. Britney, Christina, and all the others hoping to hit it big wear clothes that show off their stomachs like that. So Shania started a whole fashion trend for female singers.
Come on Over is Shania's third released CD, and the second one to be a big hit. Her first CD didn't do well, but her videos were noticed by some people. One person that noticed was producer Mutt Lange. The two met, fell in love, and got married. They worked together on her second CD The Woman In Me, which set the country music world on it's ear and made her a huge star. The CD was different from everything else out there. Some people criticized the CD for being too different, not country enough.
In 1997, Shania's third Cd, Come On Over was released. Again, Mutt produced, and the two of them wrote all the songs on the CD. Some people in country music criticized this CD for being too different too, and think Mutt shouldn't be producing country music. He is well know for producing many rock acts like AC/DC and Def Leppard. Come On Over has sold millions of CDs since it's release. The last I heard, it has sold over eighteen million copies. Obviously, being different from traditional country music is working for her. Also, by having songs that are different, maybe had a bit of a pop feel to them, the songs appeal to more people, and expose more people to country music who don't really care for more traditional sounding country songs. I'm not really a fan of the more traditional sounding country songs myself, and I love this CD.
The success of Shania's CDs has cleared the way for other country artists to put out material that is different from traditional sounding country music. It has also opened the way for new artists. I have heard some people - some are other country artists - complain about how country music has changed in the last several years that country music is being ruined by these changes. Some people want country music to stay the way it had been for years. I don't agree with that. I think the changes have made country music more appealing to people who never liked country before. Other types of music go through changes to adjust to what the public is wanting. Why shouldn't country do the same?
Come On Over has sixteen songs on it. Nine or ten were released as singles. I can't remember the exact number now. I was very happy to see how many songs were on the CD when it came out. Most CDs only have about ten songs on them. Also, for several years now, most artists only release three or four singles from a CD and then move on to the next one. I think it makes more sense for more songs to be released from the CDs. There is more of a chance that people will hear songs they like and decide to buy the CD. If I have only heard one or two songs from a CD, I'm not very willing to hand over the money to buy the CD, especially considering how expensive CDs are now. I am more likely to buy a CD when I know there are several songs on it that I like. In the long run, artists who release more songs from their CD, like Shania did with Come On Over end up selling a lot more CDs in the long run.

SONGS
I'm not going to talk about every song on this CD since there are so many. I'm just going to talk about some of my favorites - though I like all the songs on the CD. Many of the songs on this CD don't really sound like country songs to me. I will hear some things that are common in country songs every so often, like this one instrument that I don't know the name of. I'm thinking it is a steel guitar, but I don't know for sure. Even the songs that do sound more country are different from traditional country songs. I think the CD sounds more pop than country.
Man! I Feel Like a Woman!
The song starts off with fiddles, and then an electric guitar and drums join in. Those two instruments are prominent throughout the song. The fiddles are heard again here and there in the song, but overall, this doesn't sound really country to me. This is an upbeat, happy song with a fast tempo. She is singing about enjoying being a woman. The song does have a good beat. It even makes me - who can not dance at all - want to get up and dance when I hear it.
Love Gets Me Every Time
This song starts off with some guitars and drums. Then fiddles are heard briefly. This song is more country sounding than the first two on the CD. The background vocals are more noticeable on this song. It is another upbeat song with a fast tempo. It is about a woman that was single, not looking for a relationship, and happy. Then she met and fell for a guy.
Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)
This song starts off with fiddles, and then drums. It is another song that does sound like a country song, but it is different from a traditional country sound. It has a fast tempo and is upbeat. The song is about a woman telling the man in her life that she loves him and to not be jealous or over react to little things.
From This Moment On
This is a duet with Bryan White, another country singer. This is a beautiful song. The music seems to be a bit softer. I don't think this one sounds like a country song. The tempo is slower. The song is about two people who are in love and how they are going to be together from this moment on. I have heard that this song has been played at a lot of weddings. It is a good song for that.
Come On Over
The tempo of this one is faster. This is a very upbeat, happy song. An accordion is very prominent in the song. The song is about her inviting a friend over who has had a bad day so the friend and relax and unwind.
You're Still The One
This is my favorite song on the CD. I love the song and the lyrics. This song was a huge hit for Shania. I saw the video on MTV several times. The music in this song is a bit softer, and it has a slower tempo. It starts with drums and what I think in an organ with Shania speaking some lines. Then a piano joins in and she starts to sing. This is a beautiful love song. The song is about a couple that was told that they would never make, but years later they are still together and still very much in love. The song could be about Shania and Mutt's relationship.
Honey, I'm Home
This song is louder, and the tempo is faster. The music sounds more like a country song. This is just a fun song. I can't help but smile when I hear her singing about her bad day. She got a run in her hose and her hair went flat. What a disaster of a day. The song is about a woman who had a really bad day. Everything that could go wrong did. Once she gets home, she is asking her husband to do some things for her like get her a beer and rub her feet.
That Don't Impress Me Much
This is another upbeat, happy song. I've also seen the video for this song on MTV too, but the song sounded a little different. It must have been a re mix version. The version in the video on MTV didn't sound like a country song at all, while the version on the CD does. Shania speaks a few of the words in the song. It is about a woman who isn't impressed by a man. She is poking some fun at him when she mentions all the gel in his hair at one point, and asks if he thinks he's Elvis at another. This is another song that makes me smile.
Black Eyes/Blue Tears
This song is about domestic violence. A woman has been in an abusive relationship. She gets to the point where she has had enough, and she gets out. I think this song has a good message to it.
The booklet for this CD has several pictures of Shania and the words to all the songs.
I love this CD. It is one of my favorites. Anyone who liked The Woman In Me would probably like this CD. If you are a fan of more traditional sounding country music, then this CD probably isn't for you.
