jeffpresto's Full Review: Darkest Days [PA] by Stabbing Westward
I bought this album over two years ago when it debuted, and have been listening ever since - well sort of.
A few months ago, I lost my CD wallet containing my favorite 24CDs, just my luck. After that, I bought a personal MP3 player and now I download my music. I still occasionally buy CDs for my home stereo, just not as many CDs as I used to. And with Napster being shut down (practically) my bad luck is still "haunting me". (Sorry, I don't have enough puns in my reviews lately. LOL)
Well, I downloaded the entire CD (hey, I had the album at one point, so I TECHNICALLY paid for it) the other day and still enjoy the music.
Stabbing Westward has a very unique sound. It's a mix of alternative / techno / hardcore / industrial styles all mixed into one musical style. Sounds complex? It is, and that's part of the band's allure. Songs are very unique and comprised of many beats, guitar riffs, and amazing vocals. The mood is sometimes deep and depressing, while some songs are vengefull and full of wrath. The CD seems to go through the following moods in this order: denial, acceptance, anger, and depression. It's very interesting and makes for some good variety.
The most popular song on this album is "Save Yourself" which sits itself in the middle of the CD, falling somewhere between the acceptance and anger stages of the CD. However, there are some truly amazing songs other than that one on this CD. The song "Waking Up Beside You" is an amazing, emotional song. You'll just have to download it yourself or buy the CD (which I recommend) to find out for yourself.
All in all, I can't recommend this CD enough. Since the sound of Stabbing Westward is so unique, I can't really compare it to another band you might like. Think of a softer sounding Orgy - that's the closest I can come. Go download a few songs and find out for yourself, then prepare to be in Stabbing Westward heaven.
