AphexSliter's Full Review: Preemptive Strike by DJ Shadow
Those of you who are not familiar with DJ Shadow should be. Do yourself a favor -- go out and buy his first album "Endtroducing...". And when you fall in love with it, you can get "Preemptive Strike", which contains mostly music that predates "Endtroducing...", singles released only in the UK. I mean, you could pick up the imports, but why do that when you can get the same music for a much lower price?
The disc covers three separate UK releases, "In/Flux", "What Does Your Soul Look Like" and "High Noon". The first was released several years prior to "Endtroducing...", and contains many of the elements that really define what makes DJ Shadow great. I think of it almost as a thesis statement, from which Shadow has successfully branched off of.
While "In/Flux" and b-side "Hindsight" are mellow, they pale in mellowness compared to the amazing 4 part "What Does Your Soul Look Like". This is quite frankly, just an amazing trip into Shadow's mind. It defies description. I love it.
And finally, the disc wraps up with the new (sort of) single "High Noon," the reason I picked up the album in the first place. Highly-addictive, this song rocks where the others, uh, roll. Has to be heard to be believed.
