The band Korn came together back in the early nineties, but didn’t receive any major public recognition until they came out with their self-titled album in 1994. The small band from Bakersfield, California was overwhelmed with all the fans they had made with the release of only one album. Two years later in 1996, they released a second album, Life is Peachy which brought them even more publicity. By this time, Korn was one of the most popular bands in the rock industry. But the music didn’t stop there. In 1997, they released a third album, Follow the Leader, which featured some of their best songs such as Freak on a Leash, and Got the Life. The band is composed of 5 members: Jonathan Davis-Vocals, Bagpipes Fieldy-Bass Munky-Guitars Head-Guitars David-Drums
Here is a rundown of all the songs on the CD, with a brief description, and my rating of each:
Tracks 1-12=48 seconds of silence, the CD starts on track 13.
13.It’s On!-8/10-Starts off slow with one guitar, and then emerges to many guitars and Jon’s singing. There is a solid drumbeat throughout the song and the refrain.
14.Freak on a Leash-9/10-Starts off pretty bad in my opinion, but gets a lot better. I love the refrain! The drums, guitars, and singing come together beautifully (sounds great with a subwoofer)! After the second refrain, we hear Jon’s gibberish-he just spits out sounds; it goes great together with the music and guitars.
15.Got the Life-8/10-Starts off with a fast and constant beat, which leads into Jon’s voice along with enormous bass-then slows down just to a drum beat with Jon’s singing; then explodes back into the fast paced beat it started out with, and fades into silence.
16.Dead Bodies Everywhere-7.5/10-Begins sounding like a little kiddie’s song, and then explodes into guitars and Jon’s singing right into the refrain. After 2 refrains it sounds like it’s over but it goes into a moderate drumbeat with these little sound effects into a constant guitar beat along with the drums-all with Jon’s singing! It finally slows down and fades out back to the kiddie sound it had when it started.
17.Children of the Korn-9/10-Starts out with Ice Cube talking and his voice follows throughout the song as a backup. The song boils up to a refrain with heavy guitars and drums, then back to a steady drum beat and back to the refrain (think of a series of hills). This is a great song because it combines the elements of rock and rap into one heavy composition of music.
18.BBK-8/10-Begins with guitars and drums holding a steady beat and into Jon’s singing, then into a brief pause-which follows up into a hard refrain with heavy bass, and leads back down to singing along with the beat and up to the refrain. Then we move into Jon’s gibberish again-he just explodes shouting out undecipherable words, back into a series of refrains, and then stops abruptly.
19.Pretty-6.5/10-Starts out calmly and then Jon comes in singing. Quickly comes to a refrain, and goes back down to singing. To me, this song has no definition. It has nothing that stands out to it; and it’s real calm compared to other songs on the CD.
20.All in the Family-10/10-This song is truly amazing. The base, guitars, drums, it comes together perfectly! It makes my subwoofer scream!. This is magic in the making. Basically all it is is Korn and Limp Bizkit dissing each other back and forth. The reason why this song is so perfect is because it combines rap, rock and humor into one masterpiece. Limp Bizkit adds the rap element, while Korn jams on the guitars. What they say about each other is funny as hell-you have to hear it to believe it.
21.Reclaim My Place-5/10-Goes into hard guitars and drums almost immediately. The overall pace stays fast and constant-the guitars just keep going. This song’s just not appealing to me. I lose interest when I hear this song-I guess cause it’s just too boring for me to listen to.
22.Justin-5/10-Starts off with the usual guitars following a constant drumbeat. The guitars lower the intensity for Jon’s singing, and then rise back up to the refrain. Nothing spectacular about the refrain; just a lot of pauses and Jon’s screaming. Again, there’s nothing really special about this song-It doesn’t leave a mark in my head making me say to myself “Wow, this is a good song, I’m going to remember the track number so I can listen to it again.”
23.Seed-7.5/10-Starts off easy and calm, pauses, and then goes into guitars and drums, which leads the way to Jon’s singing. The refrain is nice-I like it. The beat is the best part in the refrain, along with Jon’s singing it falls together just perfectly. After 2 refrains, the song goes into Jon’s gibberish, and then back to the refrain, where it finally winds down to the end.
24.Cameltosis-8/10-Starts off with a steady beat, and leads into singing from Ice Cube, up to the refrain, which features Jon’s singing along with guitars and the drums following the constant beat started at the beginning of the song. There are a total of 5 refrains in the song, 2 separate, and 3 consecutive ones at the end of the song.
25.My Gift to You+Ear Ache My Eye-4/10-Starts out with Jon on the bagpipes, a solid drumbeat, and guitars. The bagpipes fade out, and then there is only drums and singing, leading the way for Jon’s singing. The whole song is guitars, a steady drumbeat, and Jon’ singing. It ends with about 8 minutes and 30 seconds to go, then with about 6 minutes and 25 seconds left, you hear 2 guys talking (I can’t say who they are-maybe a separate band?) until there’s about 4 minutes and 45 seconds left. Then one of the guys start singing, which begins the last song on the CD. I don’t really find any of the songs they play on this track appealing-it’s just a weird track.
Overall
This CD is Korn’s 3rd album out of 4. In my opinion, this is their second-best album (the first would be Issues). Some of Korn’s best songs (such as Freak on a Leash, Got the Life, and All in the Family). As an overall rating I think the CD deserves a 9.2/10. Some other artists I would recommend whose music is related to that of Korn’s: Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, Godsmack, Metallica, Rammstein, and Rob Zombie.
