Re: 80% History Lesson (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for your thoughts, though I believe it's about 65% album and 55% history. I've got some ideas how to better direct people to the meat of the review, so again--thanks for the ideas.

80% History Lesson (Reply to this comment)

Your review is primarily a history lesson on Tori Amos and I have to read through a lot of stuff before I find out about the album. Maybe you should start with the album review and lead into her life.

'Tis okay. I personally also thought Spark was the first, but it seems (according to Billboard) that Jackie's Strength was released first. Didn't go anywhere, and then Spark happened and Jackie's Strength got "popular" (or at least as far as Amos goes).

Thanks for the comment (all of you, actually). Much, much appreciated.

I find it hard (Reply to this comment)

to be moved by a song that makes absolutely no sense to me. I know many are intrigued by her hallucinogenic wordplay, I'm just not one of them. This CD was a small step up from "Boys For Pele," but for me at least, only because it contained fewer songs, therefore there was less to dislike.

I agree she is one of the most gifted vocalists and pianists we may ever see. She just needs to get a little closer to earth again, as she was on "Little Earthquakes" (her best work, in my mind).

Having said that, however, I'm glad you find something in her work that is good for you. That's what music is supposed to be about anyway, isn't it?

Take care,
Marsha

I just had to go to that link and watch that video, bringing on a damn, did I really just see what I think I just saw? type of moment. Thank God she moved on to being the Tori Amos we all know and love.

As always, great review...

Nice review Shelly. This is my absolute favorite Tori release as most of the songs are really solid. Hotel is the one I like the most. :)

Minor little nitpick... (Reply to this comment)

I'm 99.99% positive that "Spark," Tori's last top-10 modern rock hit, was the first single off the album, followed by "Jackie's Strength," rather than the other way around. "Raspberry Swirl" and "She's Your Cocaine" were both also released as singles, even though I don't think I'd describe either of them as particularly "radio-friendly."

Anyhow. Excellent review, as always.
