nevereverafter's Full Review: From the Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos
All right, I'll start with this: I'm not really a Tori fan. I have only four of the millions of her albums. But I'd rather be normal than a fan of Mrs Amos. Her crazed fans are almost as weird as she is, and I think this album is the reason.
I bought this album because everyone said that beginners of her style should start with this or To Venus And Back. I bought To Venus And Back, then Under The Pink. Under The Pink was boring so I thought I might find some well-written songs in this. I was wrong.
But there are some good things. I fell in love with Cruel the first time I listened to it, but that's probably only because I heard it on To Venus And Back live. I must admit that the live version was a lot better (it was more interesting and such).
Then I listened to Playboy Mommy. Ahem, No. This just sounds like an upbeat Purple People with worse lyrics.
Raspberry Swirl has it's good spots, but Tori acts like she's all that when she's really not. Starting a song with "Let's go" and then repeating it several times in the song isn't the way to go.
I never listened to Spark. I just think that the World isn't ready for that song, same with Northern Lad and Black-Dove. I just can't listen through them.
Jackie's Strength is not only a more calm song, but it may be one of the best songs on the album, with one exception. She put the track right between Raspberry Swirl and I I E E E! The beat of the songs throws completely off and it just sounds strange.
I I E E E is a better song as well, but the lyrics are too far out there. The backing vocals-- no, they practically are the leading vocals --are just gibberish. Maybe she's just vocalizing, but in Cruel she says a bunch of insane things that make no sense as well. I heard something about her "secret language", but it throws off the understanding of the song. I I E E E is still one of my favorites, I can listen to it without pulling my hair out, but it's too weird. Plus, it sounds too much like Raspberry Swirl.
Liquid Diamonds is a so-so song. The best part had to be when she first sings "Liiiquid Diiaamonds" in the course. The worst part is that some of the lyrics aren't in the booklet (at least, I haven't seen them), and most of the lyrics are really horrible. Most of the time it seems Tori picks lyrics without any thought, like they were nothing about the song, and worries about what strange stuff she's going to write on her hand and how she's going to play two pianos at the same time at her concerts.
She's Your Cocaine got me really angry. Even though I don't know exactly what the song is about, it seems like she's talking about a Drag King. And then the lyrics "Is it true that Devils end up like you" made me skip over the song right there. Tori has some serious problems with her judging people just because they're not exactly like her. I've heard her rant about Homosexuals, Blacks, and everything in between. When I read lyrics for some of her songs, I go "Holy, what an angry woman . . . !" from her guiltiness of 'loving a brown man'.
And of the other songs I haven't mentioned aren't rated because I haven't listened to them that much. I feel no need to do so because they're boring, hard to understand, and just Tori.
Of course hard-core Tori fans are going to love this, but if you haven't listened to her much, you might want to start off with To Venus And Back or Little Earthquakes.
